The USA switched to digital broadcasts of TV signal around February 2009. Before that, all TV stations were transmitting analog signals. This TV has an analog tuner and is not able to receive digital broadcasts.
Unfortunately, this TV does not have any input jacks for coaxial cable, RCA cords, or even a plug for TV input. So you don't have any simple means to hook up to DVD players or videogames, or (most importantly) a digital-to-analog converter box. Basically, this TV has no value in the USA. If you take it to a country that still broadcasts NTSC analog signals over the air, though, you'll be in good shape. But if I'm on vacation in one of those places, the last thing I'm going to do is spend my time watching a teeny tiny television, you know?

go to walmart and get a digital box for basic television.

From the video, it looks like the opening to the battery compartment is on the right side (when looking at the TV screen.) Also, if you are in the USA, even with battery power, you will not be able to pick up any TV stations with the hand-held TV because it has analog TV reception and there are no TV stations broadcasting analog in the USA.

The axles may have substantial amount of in/out play, 1/4 inch or more. Does the axle in question actually drive the wheel or does it freewheel?

It's a typical differential so if you get both wheels off the ground and spin one wheel, the other wheel should rotate in the opposite direction.

The axles are retained by the differential assembly (inside transmission) so if the axle is truly falling out, to fix it will require transmission be removed and opened. Probably not an economical repair unless you can DYI or replace with good used unit.
