My Sons Xbox had sound but a blank screen. at first i thought it was the video leads.. Borrowed a set from his friend but still the same.. blank screen but sound. I thought about the towel trick but was wary.. so instead i went to a comp repair shop. He suggested the towel trick... he said it may or not work. So being out of warranty with nothing to lose , i gave it a go.
Remove your hard drive and video leads leave just the power lead attached. Wrap your xbox in three towels and switch it on for about 20mins (which i did). Switch it off (it may already have switched itself off ! leave it to cool for about 15 mins and then plug everything back in . I was amazed to find my sons xbox up and running agian. Hope it works for you !! It did for me and i still can't belive it!

I just had this exact problem, E 68, and was about to call MS, I removed HD and let system reboot without it and it booted fine i rebooted one more time without HD for a total of two. I then tried to reinstall the harddrive and noticed that it did not want to snap in. I played with it a few min more and finally got it to snap in properly. I think it was not seated properly to begin with as it was down further on the back side than it was before i removed it. I also heard two distinct clicks as it clicked in at the rear and then at the front. Once i did that it fired back up with both my profiles and is now working again. my 360 is laying horizontally

Hey guys this is what I did. I took out the game so it doesn't scratch, turned off the Xbox 360. and then (I put my 360 horizontal [laying down]) I smacked the top of it a couple times. When I put the game back in it worked perfectly fine. I hope this works for you guys works :)

There is a very simple fix to this issue and I am not sure why it is not being talked about. I will have to make a video and post it for everyone to see, but in short, you need to overheat the GPU while keeping the CPU cool.
Now, if you do not know what you are doing, I would wait until I make a video about it. However, if you are comfortable taking your Xbox apart then it is simple.
You will need to disaseble the box all of the way down to removing the top cover and exposing the board. You do not need to remove the DVD or the fan, however you will need to take off the plastic piece that vents the fan air into the heat sinks. After you get that far, take the fan out of the case. DO NOT UNPLUG IT, as you will need it. Just pull it out of its holding spot. Next, you will want to move the DVD drive off to the side, away from the GPU heat sink, but leave it plugged in. Then set the fan on top of the CPU heat sink, the taller one, so that it does not overheat. Then turn your system on and let it RROD, then leave it on for about 10-15 min. What this will do is overheat the GPU and reflow the solder underneath it. After 10-15 min, turn your system off, let it cool, put it back together, and you should be good to go! I have done this on 3 systems that came up with error codes related to the CPU or GPU, and all 3 are now working again. Good luck!

How I worked around the "Open Tray" problem, where the game discs were not being recognized:

1. Open tray
2. Unplug power cable while tray is open
3. Plug in power cable
4. Power on console - tray closes
5. Open tray
6. Insert disc
7. Try your game

Good luck! Source: Someone else mentioned this in a forum somewhere, however I don't recall who it was or which forum. I'm just trying to get the word out so people don't send in their XBOX for repair, or open the case and void the warranty if this workaround resolves the problem.

I learned this from a Youtube video and this did the trick for me. Hopefully, it will solve it for your X-Box 360 too! 1. Put disc into X-Box 360. 2. Turn X-Box 360 off. 3. Open tray. 4. Take disc out. 5. Slam Tray 6. Turn off X-Box 360 (Immediately after slamming the tray shut) 7. Turn on X-Box 360 7. Hopefully, it will work this time!

After much searching I was finally able to fix E73 on my Xbox 360.

I cannot guarantee that this will work for everyone and personally it was a last resort for me but there don't seem to be many options to fix it.

Remove the A/V cord from the back of the XBox 360. Stick two sticks into the fans to prevent them from spinning. This will cause the system to overheat within five minutes. You will know its done when the first and third quadrants light up red on the system (indicating the system has overheated). Unplug the system, plug it back in and turn it on to see if it was successful. (Note: While this method does not void your warranty, if your XBox is still under warranty I suggest sending to Microsoft to fix.)

If your controller is not assigned a position, and pressing the sync buttons on both the console and the controller don't fix it (i.e. they both spin for a bit, but then the console's lights turn off and the controller's return to a pulsing pattern), the the problem is actually likely to be your TV, believe it or not. The issue is HDMI -- it's a secure connection between the Xbox 360 and the TV, and if there's an issue with that connection, the Xbox won't even be able to turn on since it'll be unaware of the TV's resolution, color capabilities, etc. Try turning off the TV and then turning off the Xbox. Keep the TV off and turn the Xbox console back on. You'll see the same behavior; but now turn the TV back on and you should see the controller get assigned a position. As soon as the Xbox is aware of what it's connected to via HDMI, things start to work again.
