Most DVD players have buttons to control the DVD on the player itself. If it does not, your only option is to get a universal remote and program it for your DVD player.

normally the label goes up however if there is no label one side is usually shinier than the other that side goes down. If all else fails put the disk in if it reads it than you have it right if it fails to read the disc than turn it over. It shouldn't hurt anything to put it in upside down

This is probably the 'progressive scan' feature for your DVD player.
If you haven't had any other problems with the player, try pushing the button again (a second time). This feature is likely a 'toggle-on, toggle-off, so a second 'push' should turn-off the progressive scan.
If this doesn't correct it, power the unit off, then power-on again. It it doesn't automatically power-up without the progressive scan, try pushing the pscan button again. Hopefully this will turn-off your undesired progressive scan. Good luck!

No disc error can be a DIY like the following steps.

Assuming that the disc is good.

Since you've already done the #1 now proceed to #2.

1.Cleaning the lens. - Sometimes because of dust the lens can't read any disc.

Try clean the lens by soft cotton buds. Be careful while doing this.

2.Replacing the ribbon - Check the ribbon connected to the lens from the main board for scratch, damage. Once it has an open line then of course the lens can't read the disc. Also try to erase the contact by pencil eraser.

If you've done the steps above and the symptoms still there then the next step requires you a little knowledge in soldering technique and reading the ohmmeter.

3.Checked the motor - Check the motor that spin the disc with an ohmmeter. You can test it using the ohmmeter (x1) even it is connected on the lens assembly.

Good motor - reading should be fairly high and it will spin.

Bad motor - reading will drop to low resistance and will not spin.

Hint : 50% of my repaired unit the above parts are commonly caused of the problem.

If you confirmed that you have a defective motor then replace it with a new one. Before replacing the new motor you have to check the clearance of the disc holder with the old one. The clearance should be the same as the old because if not the lens will not read the disc if it is too far or too close.

The a and b are for recording a section of video from point a to point b...you would press "a" when you want to record a certain "clip"...and then when you have the clip you need..then you press "b" to end the "clip" record...the played will play from point a to b continuously

Take the DVD player hold it tight in ur hand and give it a couple shakes,to losen stuck frame or the plastics warp.Plug it back in to see the DVD player drawer open and close now,not take the DVD player aparts check,if the the motor or the rubber band,not a dead motor or broken rubber band.

I had this problem, till i went into setup on my remote then chose audio and noticed all the speakers for surround sound were turned on in the options. As i don't have surround sound i turned them off . Now it works ! The player was sending the sound to non exsistant speakers. Hope this helps

If the DVD is not dirty/scratched it might mean it has a stupid security thing that wont let you play "un-copyrighted" dvd.
There are ways around it but I think they are quite costly.
