By spacing, do you mean a blank lines between footnotes?

• In the document, Insert Footnote No 1 where you want it. You can use CTRL ALT F to do this and type the text of the footnote
  
• Scroll back to the document you need Footnote No 2 and repeat as before.
• Have a Print Preview to see the result.and exit from the PrintPreview
  
• Now you need a blank line between the Footnotes 1 & 2. To do this go to the VIEW menu and click on Footnotes. Goto the end of the first footnote and press the ENTER key to get a blank line

If it says that all you can do is to open it without formatting or graphic, that's all you'll get. Document is corrupt and you won't be able to open it Sorry if you needed to recover it. Just as a remote possibility, if document as made by you, look at recovery folderC:\Documents and Settings\"your login\Program Data\Microsoft\Word

Uncle, you found a great workaround to fix this problem. If you would like a more permement solution, try the one below. As to whether your files will be recoverable remains to be seen.

Resetting password user name & password: b> *Start your computer
*Keep pressing "F8" as the computer starts.
*This will enter the computer in Safe Mode.
*(When the window "Advanced Boot Options" opens, choose "SafeMode" with arrow key and confirmby pressing the Enter key, then computer enters Safe Mode.
*Once you are in the Safe mode Click "Administrator" on the Windowslogin screen.
*Take note that you have set the Administrator password before, you need toinput the changed password instead of leaving "Password" field blank.
*Then click Start > Control Panel > User Accounts > Select the accountthat is locked and change the password.
**Restart computer and login into the account you just created using your newpassword.

You mean the Word file has already been encrypted from opening or viewing? If so, I think you can get this MS Office password recovery utility to find the forgotten combination, it can automatically find your forgotten password for protected Office Word doc, Excel, PowerPoint etc. No matter the document is password protected to be opened or editing, it will help. The program that I recommend is the Word Password Recovery 5.0, It recovers/removes the "Password to Open" and "Password to Edit" for you to view and edit the document freely.

Microsoft Word is a software you would have to purchase. I am not 100 percent sure if Microsoft offers a Buy and Download service for its office products. I would try Open Office its a great alternative to MS Office and its free. I hope I have helped you some.
