sure or paper scraps in side blocking key sensors or other parts clean all that chaff out first. blow it and brush and pluck it all out. there is nothing simple on printers, and 10000 types. if fails to work after all that , it needs service.

Try scanning from MS Paint or Acrobat & see if it works. If it does, the HP/Vista software is probably at fault. If not, the scanner is probably faulty. Did it ever work or did you just plug it in? (Did you load the correct drivers?)

Ok so you removed the tape from the cartridge and made sure it was completely secured to the tray. Next try "install new cartridge" in the printer settings. Sometimes that needs to be done to tell the computer there is a full cartridge instead of the empty one.

It is probably not possible to turn on a printer just by clicking print, unless it is a special feature of your specific model. You will have to turn it on manually before you print anything.

The printer is offline if the printer is turned off. You need to turn the printer on to be able to use it.

We have a Photosmart C4700 series and we can only use recycled ink cartridges 2 or 3 times and then the printer rejects them. I don't know if this anwers your question at all.

Black printer ink in HP Photosmart may fail to be recognized by the printer. Most times an error message will be sent indicating that something is wrong with the black print cartridge. Sometimes the printer may accept to print with the black ink, but the printouts may have horizontal lines and very illegible letters. In such a case a manual cleaning of the print head should be carried out. In doing the manual cleaning, one should spray Windex heavily on paper towel and wipe off the surface of the print head.
