If you purchased the computer with Windows XP Professional pre-installed from a computer-store, then the computer-store is guilty of "software piracy". Call Microsoft (1-800-R-U-LEGIT) and report the store for not selling you a "genuine" copy of Microsoft software.

If you have a brand-name computer (e.g., Dell, eMachines) purchased since 2001, it came with a genuine copy of Windows, and a decal (either on the side of a desktop computer, or on the bottom of a laptop) with a valid 25-character product-key.
Contact that manufacturer, and order a replacement set of the "System Restore" CD/DVD disks. Reinstall Windows using those disks and the product-key.

If you have a "bootleg" version of Windows, you need to follow the on-screen instructions to "get genuine", i.e., use your credit-card to purchase a valid product-key from MIcrosoft.

Or, purchase a Windows 7 Upgrade package from a computer-store, and install Windows 7.

I would definitely reformat my hard drive and reinstall my Windows XP, reinstall my programs, and use my backups to restore my data. After that I would install a good antivirus program and then re-install my windows 7 trial version. Have fun!

u dont have to get the genuine product key unless you want to register your copy of Windows XP with Microsoft. You can install the software with your unregistered version of Windows XP.

you must have the key from the install cd or box. when you install the xp software it will ask for the 16 or 20 character code...a unique prod key for that disk. its is usually on disk or disk container

You can not upgrade to Windows 7 for free legally. At this time, Microsoft no longer even sells windows 7. Some dealers may still have it in stock, but it's no longer for sale.

actually your product key is located in your cd cover, in case you miss place your cd cover, insert you cd" then click explore,then start to open each folder and look for you product mostly they appear on read me document...
