How do you read the light meter? What does the

If the reading is centred then it is right for the settings that you currently have onthe camera. If the reading is - then the light is less than optimal and you need to lower the shutter speed or open the aperture setting (make the f number less). If the reading is + then the light is too bright and you need to increase the shutter speed or shutown the aperture setting (make the f number greater).

Trying to use a Phoenix 500mm telephoto lens

Some longer Tele lenses extend into the camera and prevent the mirror from moving up on some models with larger mirrors. One solution> get a 1.4 teleconverter It will add some space between camera and lens. Two solution> buy another Maxxum body on Ebay. Some Maxxums can be bought very cheap.

When I look through the viewfinder, everything is dark....

First remove the battery. wipe off the battery contacts. reinstall the battery. Battery may be weak, replace.
If that fails, remove the lens. See the mirror in there?
If its stuck in the up position, you can return it by hand. But I recommend a toothpick. It won't leave fingerprints.

Film won't load on Minolta 400si Maxxum Camera

My daughter took the camera to her photography teacher he was able to load the film by wrapping more film around the roller. It's not as easy to load as my Canon. I thought we had put plenty of film around it already. Oh well, it's working anyway.

Mode Button Inoperable

In most battery opperated, fim cameras, the buttons are usually composed of a plastic outer, the part you press, and underneath that button is a thin piece of angled plastic that keeps the button from depressing when you aren't touching it. That thin piece of plastic usually isn't very sturdy and can and had a tendency to break in half making it impossible to get a battery reaction. If you trust yourself with a small screw driver and have a good memory of what you take appart, you can replace this piece yourself. Any camera shop will have the piece you need. Other than that, you'll need some super glue to secure it and you should have a refurbished Mode button~!
Good Luck and I hope you're up taking photos soon!

Camra crashed

If the camera is going into rewind mode as soon as it is switched on you should check the manual rewind button and make sure it is not stuck in the on position. It is only a small rubber button that you would use a fine pen tip to push in, sometimes they can get stuck inside the cover and end up being on all the time. This model I think has the button on the bottom of the camera.

When using flash it flashes multiple times when taking picture..strobe flash

Hello
You will find that if the flash pulses slowly several times before taking the main picture you have got the camera set to red eye reduction flash, you will see an eye symbol on the display.

Check the owners manual for the method of changing this to the setting you need.

Lens

Sorry, the mounts of Minolta manual focus lenses are different than their auto focus series. Sigma, Tokina and Tamron all make compatible zoom lenses to fit the Maxxum series cameras

Minolta Maxxum 400si is locked up

link to your manual, it tells us that we have a winding motor problem, I would do as you have done, so I would ensure that batterys are in great shape, the only other thing I could suggest is to try to turn the winding motor by hand in case it is just locked up. Failing that I presume the motor has died and needs replacement.

Minolta Maxxum 450si - dark images through view finder

The aperture mechanism needs repair - though most parts are no longer available because Sony purchased Minolta, this is a problem that can be repaired by a competent independent repair shop.
