Minolta Maxxum 400si 35mm SLR Camera - Page 2 - Answered Questions & Fixed issues
What is the size of the lens for this camera?
The Maxxum 400si is an interchangeable lens camera, so there is no single lens for it.
If you're asking about the mount, it uses the Minolta A-mount so all such lenses, including current Sony-mount lenses, will fit on it.
If you're asking about the lens focal length, Minolta has made lenses ranging from 16mm to 600mm. These lenses vary widely in size (and weight and cost). The filter size also varies from lens to lens.

What size lens does this camera use?
Hello kry...With a large selection of lenses, the Konica Minolta 400SI offers a range from super wide fisheye to 600mm super telephoto. Joe
Thanks for choosing Fixya!
Is it possible to manually
The description of the manual focus is available in part 2 of the manual, page 40. The manual is available as a PDF here:
http://ca.konicaminolta.com/support/manuals/film-cameras/film_af_slr/index.html#si_series . It is the seventh camera in the SI series in the list.
To manually focus the lens, press the focus-mode button on the front of the camera (bottom left when you are behind the camera) until M. focus appears in the data panel. If you have an AF lens, turn the focusing ring until the subject appears sharp. If you have an xi-Series or AF Power Zoom lens, pull and turn the lens control ring.
The focus indicator will light when the subject is in focus. To return to autofocus mode, press the focus-mode button again. The camera will also return to the autofocus mode if you press the program reset button.
I hope this helps.

(in manual focus, you can take a picture even if the subject in the focus frame is not in focus. Often it means you need to take multiple pictures to get a good shot of the subject. The advantage is that you can get some interesting shots.)
I need a new back door for the camera. does one
Possibly. http://uscamera.com/1min006.htm lists it as "out of stock at this time" but does not say when it might be back in stock. Try dropping them a line; there is contact information at the bottom of that page.

The Miinolta 400 si SLR 35 mm is an excellent camera for a beginner as well as the seasoned photographer. It has a complete automatic mode for the point & shoot picture taker as well as manual modes if you want to favor shutter speed over aperature or aperature over shutter speed. I've had one for years and have gotten excellent results.
What battery for Milolta maxxum
You need one 2CR5 lithium cell for your camera. They're still available, see here for details.
Note that other suppliers stock them as well, I only link to the
supplier provided as they're where I buy mine and the page shows you
alternative model numbers that the battery is sometimes known by.

Minolta Maxxum 4 & 5 - battery problems
it may not be the camera's. Some retail stores do not rotate their stock....in other words you may be purchasing an old battery. Check the dates on the package. My suggestion to you is to buy your batteries at a camera shop.
Can't fully see thru the lens
Look in the back where the film goes in. Are all the shutter blades flat and in place, or are they wrinkled or is one or two blades bent or out of place preventing the shutter from functioning fully? Put the camera in M focus and M exposure at about 15th, Fire the camera several times. If the shutter looks and works ok then take the lens off and look at the mirror. Fire the camera a few times. Doe the mirror go all the way up to the top and come back down, all the way? If so then the shutter would appear to work fine and the lens may e the problem. If the shutter or mirror box do not work correctly they will have to be repaired by a qualified technician.
How do i load the film
Open the door.Drop film roll in the camera and pull film up to the mark to winding take up spool, close the door and it will get automatically pulled on the take up spool. The number 1 will appear on screen.if 0 is flashing repeat the procedure to retry the loading..

How do you remove the HELP message?
On Minolta cameras this often means that the film transport motor needs to be replaced. Since your 400si cannot advance film, it yells for help.
Send it to a repair shop for a new motor and a cleaning, or buy another on Ebay. The 400si bodies are cheap these days. You might even end up with an extra lens or flash.
My Maxxum 40si is reluctant to shoot with a 75/200
Part of the problem is how much light is passed through the lens to the AF sensors below the mirror. The camera wants to confirm focus before allowing the shot. If not enough light for the sensor to confirm, no release!!
Suggestions:
1. pick sunny days to shoot. I know, birds don't care how sunny it is.
2. Push the button on the front, and put the camera in Manual focus mode. Focus it yourself, and take yer shot.
3. Get a lens that passes more light. On the lens you will see a 1:4-5.6 or something similar. it may have the letter f/4.5-5.6. This relates to how much light the lens passes to the film and sensors. Lower numbers mean more light passes. Hence a 2.8 passes more that a 5.6. You should be able to find a lens in the 70-200mm range with 2.8 rating on Ebay. Max light transmission varies with the lens extension. More light will pass at the shorter 70mm than at the 200 end, even if the lens is wide open the entire time. Note the 4-5.6. There are 2.8-4 lenses and there are lenses that are 2.8 for all focal lengths, but they are much higher in price.

What does HELP on the camera mean.
On the maxxum cameras, that usually means the film transport motor is dead. It could also be a stripped gear, but more likely the motor. Time to repair or replace the camera.
Get a repair estimate before you commit to the fix. If you choose to get it repaired, they will most likely Clean, Lubricate and Adjust it as well. Balance the repair cost against the cost of another Maxxum on Ebay. For the price of a repair you can likely replace it with another equal or fancier model.

I have a jammed shutter on my Minolta 400si SLR.
With the shutter curtain out of place the camera will not function. If
it is only out a little you may be able to persuade the shutter blades
to fall back into position. If you bend them, or if they are out of
the proper tracks then the camera will have to be sent to a repair
service for repair.
