I HAVE A "GOLDSTAR VCR"
I should have a look at the Goldstar website. It might come under LG by the way. Makers often put free PDF's of user manuals there.

Gold Star VCR hooked up to a Shaw 700 Digital
Sending the signal through the Shaw box should not in anyway affect it. The only problem that might occur is if you tried to record an HD transmission on a VCR not built to do so. Even then the only problem you would have would be a picture that would not be a normal size.
If you are having issues then either the Shaw box or the Sharp TV's connections are introducing some type of distortion. The best way to figure out which one is to take each one in turn out of the equation. As soon as the picture problem is reproduced you will know which is the problem.

Does my dvd player play dvd-r
It all depends on the manufacturer. Some newer units may play both "-" "=" or " - + ". There are 3 diff types negative, positive and both. My advice go ahead and try it.
