Pentax *ist DL Digital Camera - Page 3 Questions & Answers
Pentax SMC D 16-45 Lens How to clean inside?
Your lens would need to be absolutely filthy with enormous dirt specks to cause the fault you describe. Dust, fingerprints, and regular minor debris simply doesn't show in the final image. In any case, you cannot clean inside the lens without dismantling it and that is a job for experienced specialists only.
Your fault is a dirty image sensor. You can buy sensor cleaning kits, but if you're inexperienced with them or trying to clean the sensor in a dusty environment you'll just make matters worse. Many camera shops offer sensor cleaning while you wait at relatively low cost. The reason you don't see the dirt when taking the picture is either because you're looking through the optical viewfinder or because the LCD screen simply doesn't magnify the image enough to show the marks which are present in the image.
You can prevent the dirt from reoccurring by never leaving the camera with the lens throat open for more than strictly necessary, and by always trying to keep the open lens throat pointing slightly down when swapping lenses.

My camera indicates that the batteries are low and
Chances
are that you are not using CR-V3 camera batteries in your *ist DL.
I have tried 2400mAh NiMH rechargable batteries and brand new alkaline
batteries in an attempt to save money.
Neither lasted anywhere
near as long as the CR-V3 batteries!
While you may be paying $15-$20
for two CR-V3 batteries, they last a LONG time!
One of the
advantages of DSLRs (and digital cameras in general) is that you save
money by no longer buying film and paying for developing/prints. But,
even at $20 for two CR-V3 batteries, I save money! I am able to take
several hundred photos on a pair of batteries (I think the manual says
500 ) instead of $10-$15 ($2-$7 for film $8 dev/print) for every
24-36 photos!
Pentax istd built in flash goes off when taking
What distance are the subjects when using the built-in flash?
The built-in flash is optimized for use between 0.7m (2.3ft) and 4m (13ft).
You could also try adjusting the ISO setting (higher ISO requires less light) or adjusting the EV value to a positive number to increase the exposure.
Camera turns on but flash won't flip up so that we
Is the lightning bolt flashing in the view finder? If so, then 'auto' is suggesting that you use the flash. To activate the flash, press the "lightning bolt" UP button on the upper left of the camera (below the mode dial).
Power / batteries
This is a common problem...sometimes you have to turn it on a couple of times.
How do I change the ISO on this camera?
Press the Menu button, select the camera icon, then scroll down to Sensitivity to change the ISO setting.
Depending on how close to the stage you are and how long your lens is, I would consider using spot-metering on the performers so as not to let the camera try to make the black background into a medium gray. The metering method is also changed in the shooting menu. Press Menu, select the camera icon, and scroll down.
Anyway you do it, you're probably going to have slow shutter speeds. If you can't use a tripod, consider a monopod. Or clamp the camera to the back of the seat in front of you. Or brace it against a wall or column.
Memory card is not being read...
Here are two suggestions:
1) Make sure the card is properly formatted. If you are sure the card is blank, you can use the Format utility in the Set-up menu to format the card.
2) Make sure the card is not write-protected. If looking at the card with the gold contacts facing you and up, there may be a little tab that can be slid to protect the card. From this angle, you can protect the SD card by sliding the tab down (away from the gold contacts) or unprotect the card by sliding the tab up. Sometimes the tab can get bumped part way between the two positions.
Battery indicator reads empty when batteries are fully charged
It looks like your question was cut short... all I see is "Battery indicator reads empty when batteries are..."
With my experience with the Pentax *ist DL, I think the problem is probably that brand new batteries still show "empty" on the indicator.
Chances are that you are not using the CR-V3 camera batteries in your *ist DL. I have tried 2400mAh NiMH rechargable batteries and brand new alkaline batteries in an attempt to save money.

Blotches on images especially images with a light background eg.
This is probably due to dust or other foreign matter on the CCD. Look at the Pentax *ist DL manual under "CCD cleaning" or "sensor cleaning" for instructions.
There is a "sensor cleaning" mode in the Set-up menu that will lock the mirror up so you can inspect/clean the CCD sensor.
DSLR do not power on
It's almost impossible to accurately troubleshoot a "dead" camera without seeing it, but your problem could be due to weak/worn out batteries or corrosion on the battery contacts inside the camera
which can prevent the full power of the batteries from flowing into the
camera. Try this free fix before you do anything else: remove the batteries and wipe the camera contacts firmly with
a dry cloth (heavy corrosion may require cleaning with a wire brush,
steel wool, or sandpaper). Remove any residue that may have fallen
into the battery compartment during cleaning, then wipe both ends of
the batteries and place them back in the camera. This cleaning clears
the problem about 90% of the time. If it doesn't work for you, your batteries may need to be replaced or the
camera may require professional repair.
When I insert a memory
Hello
Ok,
here is something that just might work.
In your case the problem
is not with the card but rather with your
camera's card reader. This is a rather hard problem to fix yourself but
here is what you can do.
Open the card slot of your camera and
peer inside with a sharp light or torch. You should see a little metal
tab or switch inside the card slot. This is the write protection
switch. Contrary to popular belief , the switch on the card does not
impact the operation of the card itself but rather tells the camera
that the card should be locked by depressing the little pin inside.
If
you put a protected card into a camera with no protection switch , the
card would operate normally.
However
, with time and repeated use , the switch will start to bend slightly
until it will no longer depress when a unlocked card is inserted.
With
a
toothpick or needle , slightly and very gently push this tab up a
little bit. (some camera's will require you to pull the tab down), This
will allow the switch to operate once again and should solve your
problem.
Kind Regards
Andrea
How to find out the software version in my camera
If you press the menu button while turning on the camera, the firmware version will appear on the screen. If you need to download a newer version, go to the Pentax website and in the support section, you can download it. Be sure to follow the download and installation directions perfectly...otherwise, you could end up with a dead camera.
When I press the menu button my camera scrolls
This is a generic problem with most digital cameras when the capacitor gets weak or a hairline crack is showing up on the capacitors outer core. I would have it checked out by a qualified technician and get a qoute for repairs
Need to change picture size
In the menu under picture size and quality, you can set it for the highest number of megapixels and finest quality.
Broken door to battery compartment
Here's a possible source, though I'd check to see whether the battery covers for the ist and the *ist are the same.
