Dell Studio 540 will not start shows black screen with parameter error message

Not very helpful info! I would try tapping f12 on booting up which takes you into the Dell Diagnostics mode. Then come back here.

540 wont boot up

The hard drive could be corrupt, this will cause the operating system to run the error checking. If you had a virus, and it infected any windows files, windows will check the files, but if it can\'t fix them, then it won;t run. You can try to enter safe mode, tapping F8 at boot, you should see a option to repair or restore. If not see if you can enter Safe Mode.In safe mode you can go to start button, all programs, accessories, system tools, system restore. You can also get a windows install disk, same version as you have, and put in the disk and hit F11, and boot from the disk, and run a repair from it.You really should go to the website Avira, and download the rescue disk, burn it to a CD. This will run a virus scan of the hard drive before windows in DOS.If there is a virus, it will kill it. But there is a chance it can\'t clean the virus and windows won\'t start. The other option is to just erase the hard drive, not format, erase it with a program like Active kill disk. Then reinstall windows, all the drivers.

My dell studio 540 won't boot. seems to be getting power (green light on back is on). Fan is loud, there is an amber light coming from the power button (usually turns white as it boots)

WARNING: Before you start troubleshooting remember that you are dealing with electricity that can KILL. http://www.kitchentablecomputers.com/static.php - rules Only work inside the computer case when the power has been switched off and disconnected. Never open the power source. Some of the below steps recommend removing physical parts within the computer. While in the computer it is highly recommend that you be aware of ESD and its potential hazards Remove the memory modules from their slots. Take the opportunity to clean the slots on the motherboards and the memory module connectors. Use compressed air to blow dust away and clean contacts with a soft cloth. Do not use a metallic vacuum cleaner if it touches any component it may create a short and cause damage to the motherboard or other components. Do not use solvent that may attract dust and never poke things like cotton buds in to slots. lightly rub an alcohol (Methylated Spirits) on a cloth not to hard let the alcohol do the work on the copper gold or silver tabs and r Allow the pins to dry. They will air dry in a matter of minutes. If reseating the memory did not resolve the issue try swapping the location of the memory. If you have only one stick of memory in the computer try moving it to another slot and then boot the computer. Check the memory module and memory slot contacts. They are either copper tin or gold. The colour will tell you which they are. Mixing tin and gold can result in corrosion that prevents proper contact. Look for any sign of physical damage to the memory module, memory slots or the motherboard. Reseat the memory modules. You should hear an audible click when they are in place. Do not use too much force to reseat the memory module in to the slot this can cause damage to the module, slot or motherboard. The hardware that you are trying to access is damaged or failing. The device drivers for the hardware are faulty or incompatible. Could be a problem with the Hard Drive or the Hard drives PCB http://www.onepcbsolution.com/ There is a connection problem such as a bad cable for internal hard drives Test all power and data leads that attach to your hard drive IDE,SATA the leads from your MOTHERBOARD TO THE HARD DRIVE make sure they have a secure dust free connections and are not faulty or just replace them they could be faulty if its a flat 40pin ide this will be the first to fail Make sure all leads that are attached to your drives dvd\cd and floppy (If Applicable) have secure connections and are not faulty. or just replace them they could be faulty a computer needs power and data to travel through every working device and continue its cycle and have an end so any faulty leads will end up with a computer error Hope this helps.

They are different Operating Systems. Window vs iOS. Different features. However, Win 7 does have sticky notes. Like post-its. Download a sticky notes program if you don't have Win 7.

Mouse keyboard and monitor dont work upon power up

If it seems like it booted up all the way except the screen is black try the steps below.Either the monitor or the video card inside the computer is bad. Borrow a monitor from a neighbor, friend, relative or co-worker and connect it to the computer. If the Borrowed monitor displays ok, then your video card is good, but your original monitor is bad. If the Borrowed monitor does not display then the video card inside the computer is bad.If it does not seem like it booted up all the way try the steps below:

When you plug in the power cord is there any lights whatsoever on the laptop, where the plug goes in or on the AC Adapter of the power cord? When you press the power button do you hear fans running, hard drive spinning, lights on the computer, hear any beeps or lights constantly blinking, hear the DvD/CD drive click and the light on the drawer of the DvD/CD turn on for a second or two? If so the computer is trying to boot or may have booted, but the screen is not showing for some reason. Beep tones and blinking lights tells the technicians what is going on with the laptop and why it is not booting. Most times it's a motherboard issue when you hear beeps or blinking lights continuous. Most times the problem is with the memory or Video Card. Count the Blinking Lights or Beeps and take note of their pattern (1 Long or 1 Long followed by 2 Short). Maybe you have a Static Charge Buildup. Remove the Power Cord, then Press and Hold the power button for 30 seconds. After 30 seconds plug the power cord back in and hit the power button to see if it boots.

Maybe your memory is bad or the memory slot is bad.

Remove the Power Cord, Open the Case and remove one of the memory chips. Set the chip aside then try rebooting the computer. If it boots, then you know the memory chip you set aside is bad so mark an x on it with an ink pen. If it fails to boot then move the chip to the next memory slot and try rebooting. If it fails take the chip out and set it aside, then put the other chip in and try booting it in both slots. If it boots, just to verify that the chip set aside is bad, mark an x on it and put it into the open memory chip slot and try booting.

Dark screen/video card problem on dell desktop

If you have an optional video card installed in your system, try plugging in the the monitor using the 15 pin VGA plug on the back of the computer and see if you get the same results. There might be a plastic cap covering the VGA plug so you'll have to remove it for testing purposes. If no change then try using a different monitor. You can also try plugging the monitor into a different computer.
If the monitor display is normal using the VGA port then your graphics card has a problem. If the monitor is still dark attached to a different computer then your monitor or monitor cable is bad.

Your other choice: Oddly, freezing the hard drive sometimess temporaily fixes the drive long enough to recover data. Replacement of the hard drive is the likely fix. Unless you want to try to freeze the HD and copy data off of it quickly, only a shop specializing in data recovery might recover such. Hopefully youhave backed up data to another drive. You might want to consider a new laptop, after you eye the possible cost of repair and/or data recovery.

Studio XPS 9100 - I cannot access the internet from this computer consistently and shutting down takes 25 minutes

Always include the version of Windows in your posts. Could have been a RAM problem if you got 4 beeps and you seem to have resolved that by reseating the modules. But the RAM error may have caused some corruption to a file on the hard drive. Assuming the diagnostics pass, you can reboot and press F8 before Windows starts to load. Select Last Known Good. If that gets you to the desktop without errors, shut down normally and reboot normally, and you should be good to go. You may also want to run chkdsk on the hard drive: Click: Start>run Type in: chkdsk C: Click OK Accept the offer to run chkdsk at next boot and then reboot. chkdsk will run before Windows loads. It may take a long time, depending on size of your hard drive, so be patient.
