Is it a good idea to upgrade capacitors in power supply,nd othe routput areas

You can replace with elna rubycon FRAKO or F&T caps a good size , but aware that you will have the capacity exactly the same and the voltage a 10 volt higher because of new capacitors of the same value can have a smaller size with the same voltage and capacity and the little size format can be giving a not nice sound but also all replacement capacitors in the beginning have a 2 days neccesary Black-gate or some ELNA caps much longer before it will sounds good , if you have had leaking caps like the brand of ITT if used especially the big blue ones, or nichicons clean the print outdoors with a nose pliers use on a canister gaslighter gas and spray on the free positions on the print where the leaking capacitors where placed and also to clean the whole print . it removes conductive materials and also if you have ones in your life have wallpapered indoors and have prepared wallpaper paste and this amp was in the same room you have luck by this tip because methyl cellulose can be highly conductive eventually creep and especially static seen very high electric malfunctions if you get your fingers on places without cleaning also after years !!! , and now you have your amplifier open and wish to customize it its your chance to prevent hidden faults, especially if you want to brush up on vintage equipment with analogue techniques. Yamaha vintage capacitors if you have a capacitance meter you will see if you have a capacitor that looks good in most times if you measure it you have sometimes a remarkable value because the capacitors have a strange tolerance that will not deformed down but to high 100 mf can be have an capacitance of 230 mf too great tolerance that is not a problem if all the capacitors are not replaced , but if you have checked this you will know you must replace ALL the capacitors at the same time (not the very little ones ) but measure is important or there are components that will be burning out , strange and remarkable but it could happens. good luck .

How do i connect an equalizer to a Yamaha rx-v995 reciever?

Connect the EQ to the Tape IN and OUT jacks and switch the Rec OUT/Zone 2 to Tape/MD. That is my best guess without having the owners manual....

When I try to turn up/down the volume from the remote the knob on the reciever does not move. I can hear the motor trying to compute the command of the volume. All other functions work on the receiver

Remove the volume knob by pulling it straight out off of it's shaft. Use a dry cloth to clean off any visible crud and dust. Spray silicone lightly; the shaft and the shaft washer. Replace knob by aligning it by it's shape and work the silicone into the volume mechanism by twisting the knob a few time. Now try it with the remote.

How do you connect a Nakamichi surround sound system to my Phillips tv model 42PF7220A/37

I'm confused. The message header shows a problem with a Yamaha RX-V995 receiver. As for connecting a Nakamichi (or any surround system) to a TV - the only connection would be the Monitor output (video connection) to an appropriate video input of your TV. If it is a Nakamichi, it is a little older and probly predates the invention of HDMI cables. My guess is you will either use the S video output or Composite video output to the TV's input with similar connections. This allows you to route whatever video sources you have connected to the Nakamichi to the TV.

Service Manual

Sorry no - I think you might have to buy a copy somewhere like Vance Baldwin or the other authorized Yamaha replacement part vendor.

Yamaha RX-V995 receiver turns on & then powers off 2 seconds late

I suggest you run self diag.  press [FM/AM] key + [Input mode] key and press the [power/standby] switch.

ps prt = power supply problem
dc prt = shorted output or leakly cap in channel
tmp prt means to hot on heatsink

you'll likely have to measure the resistances of the output FETs to find a short,

My received is on "protected"

It's not always that complicated. Until you get a service manual...

Overloads can be from excessive periods of high output and shorts would be wiring issues or a speaker blowing up.

You should be able to feel if it's hot. WHY is it overheating? Make sure it has sufficient ventilation on all sides and that vent holes are not blocked by dust balls. Ensure the fan (if equipped) is running as designed (some only operate on demand). Clean dust and debris from it.

If the amp comes back on after cooling, you're lucky. They only have so many self-protection cycles in their lives so continuously resetting or cycling their power without addressing the cause can do more harm than good.

If it protects immediately on a cool power up you should disconnect the speaker connections and try it 'naked'. If it comes up then diagnose which lead(s) are shorted. If it does not come up the problem is internal and should be left to an experienced hands-on tech.

Does not retain menu settings/levles when switched

There is a small battery that is inside the system that will need to be replaced. Usually lasts about 5 to 10 years. Battery can be ordered once you find it, and it will have to be carefully pryed out of it's container ring. Very difficult to get to. Very nice receiver, better left to the pro's if you want it to remain under warrantee.

I was playing my Yamaha RX-V995 last night and it

Well - you may have. BUT try this. Turn the volume all the way down, disconnect the speakers, and power it up. If it comes up OK, you've got a fried speaker (or bad wiring). If not - yep, you fried it.

Yamaha RX-V663 powers off when I hit the volume

Not sure If I'm on the money with this one but make sure none of your speaker leads wires are touching the case or each other. This may be causing the protection circuitry to cut in. ( I did this to my Yamaha when I plugged in yet another lead into the back )

Yamaha RX-V995: Is there anyway to only listen to

Assuming you have the same Model Variant ( I'm not sure if Yamaha varies model from Country to Country) I just switch mine to effect off ( 2 Channel) to remove the surround component so that only A or B speaker pairs work. That should fix it unless I am mistaken.

My receiver switched from dolby digital to pro

Check the settings in the Motorola to make sure it's outputting Dolby Digital instead of PCM stereo.

Indicators on the receiver can tell you if you're receiving mutlichannel audio or not.

Lost the remote and the power button is broken

The part number is V2465500 Button case RXV595. This will fit the RX-V995. I ordered and replaced my own recently.

You can order it through Vance Baldwin, Herman's Electronics or Partsearch.com or Yamaha Parts Dept.

Cost is approx $10 plus shipping.

Note: The is one "hidden" screw retaining the button case that goes thru the circuit board for the front panel from inside the unit. You will need an offset phillips screwdriver to get to it. Be patient and good luck.
