Stihl MS 290 Chain Saw include 20" 50cm Bar Chain Questions & Answers
How do i service my chain oiler
Make sure the bar groove is cleaned with a 'bar groove cleaner' its always good now and again or empty the oil tank completely and flush out with a bit of fuel, as sawdust and debris can often get into the oil tank when filling up. *DEEPER CLEAN - With in the oil tank itself is a plastic mesh filter, this mainly keeps larger debris from entering the oil line.. to clean the oiling system fully you want to remove the clutch drum and clutch, behind that is the oil pump. remove that and you can then blow an airline through the oil pipe and pick-up body back into the oil tank. Make sure both the inlet and outlet of the oil pump are clean of debris and replace it along with the clutch and drum. Also blow out the feed groove to the bar.
I've attached a copy of the full breakdown of the saw so you can see what you have to do.

Stihl ms 290
That sure is an MS290 in the picture, alright. If you have a question about it though, feel free to voice it. Or text it here if you wish. Fantastic!!
I have a Stihl MS 290, runs great, but the chain keeps tightening it's self on it's own
That's an unusual problem, usually the opposite happens. After making sure the chain brake is off, loosen the two nuts that hold the bar. Be sure to hold the bar up when adjusting the tensioner screw and adjust until the chain is just snug, but not too tight. While still holding the bar up, tighten the two nuts firmly. Check to see that the chain can move freely by hand. Then start the saw and run the chain at speed with something in front of the nose to check for adequate lubrication. You should note a slight fine spray of oil on the object in front of the nose of the bar. Inadequate lubrication, a chain that is binding on the bar, or an overly tight chain can cause the bar to heat up and expand, further tightening the chain. A properly adjusted Stihl saw will use almost all of the chain oil in the reservoir for every tank of gas. Too much oil is better than too little. The oil feed may have to be adjusted for operating in temperature extremes. If operating in very hot conditions, be sure that the saw has not run out of chain oil. The oil feeds faster when hot.
Ms290 oiler tube is leaking
There is a special puller too that STIHL dealers posess, you cannot get one, sorry, you have to pay to remove it. The good news is, there is a chinese company on eBay that sells the pumps for $6 shipped from china versus the $33 you'd pay from STIHL for the same chinese-made part.

I just put a new starter pral in and it pulled
The wire clip that secures the pulley also acts as a clutch, as the pulley turns the wire clip tries to stay still, and in doing so pushes the plastic pawl out, so you either do not have enough tention on the clip around the centre post, or the wire clip is not around the plastic dowel on the starter pawl.
How do you choke carb. for cold start
The choke is built in to the master control lever on the left side. Squeeze the throttle triggerand push the master control lever all the way down. That is choke position.

MS290 have fuel spraying
The engine is getting pressure someplace. It could be a cracked head.(This would mean the saw is a goner!) I would look at the dealer invoice and see what their warranty time is on their work and explain to him, that he did work that did not fix the problem! There is always the chance that he has a used chainsaw that he would be willing to trade for the money you have already spent!
