VHS tapes have little tabs on the side of them. They are located on the side pointing out when you put it into the VCR. If the tab is broken of it will not work to record anything. It tells the machine that the tape all ready has something on it. If you want to record over something you can usually put a little piece of paper in the hole of the missing tab and piece of tape over it you should be able to record.

Are you sure it is on the correct channel or on input, AUX? I would check your manual and see what channel it goes on. If it's on the right channel the connectors on the tv may be broken or the dvd player is broken.

I may have an answer for you but depends on age of set---most older conventional TV sets with a picture tube (not lcd etc) have a master screen control.On the chance this is the type of set you have (this question is posted under standard sets) Here is a photo of the Flyback it should have--there are two controls embedded (one focus and the other Screen)If you can get to it (some have holes in rear of set) adjust the screen up slowly until brightness is ok--not too much or lines will appear.SD TECH

This is the problem with all universal remotes--on combo units especially.You are better to of course look for an original replacement remote which will have all the features and none of these issues.
