Hooking up a Internal Hard drive

You probably need to give more details. If it's a replacement drive, did you reinstall Windows from a CD? Did you copy from the original hd? It's simple enough to remove the two cables from the original drive, physically remove and replace the drive, and hook up the new drive. But then you'd need to boot to a Windows CD in the CD/DVD player to format and install Windows, if that's what you're attempting to do.There's possibly a recovery partition on the old drive )or a recovery CD). If so, you'd connect the new drive to a second power cable, and data cable (which might not be included in the tower) :(from http://support.gateway.com/s/Manuals/Desktops/8510406.pdf)To restore system software from the Recovery discs:1 Insert the Recovery disc #1 into the CD or DVD drive.2 Restart the computer, then press and hold R when prompted to display the restore process options. The Options menu appears.3 Select a restore process option:- Press R to boot from the hard drive recovery partition or CD. If no recovery partition is found, go to Step 4.- Press F to format the hard drive and perform a full system recovery, then go to Step 5.4 Click a system restore option. For more information, see "Restoration options" on page 5.- Non-Destructive System Restore (Recommended)- Full System Restore (Destructive)- Full System Restore (with Backup) (Advanced Option)5 Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the system software restoration process.

ET183105 PC Desktop black screen

Either your monitor or video card is bad. Try connecting another monitor to the computer. Borrow a monitor from a neighbor, friend, relative or co-worker and connect it to the computer. If the Borrowed monitor displays and works, then your original monitor is bad. If the Borrowed monitor does the same as your original monitor and does not work, then the Video Card inside the computer is bad.

How to disable an onboard video card and install another video card

There should be a jumper on the motherboard OR a setting in the motherboard bios. Try looking through the bios menus first... If there isn't a way to disable, get the model of the main board and look at the jumper diagrams online.

How to get back to factory settings

Have you created your Application/driver cd from start, system recovery?

To recover your system from the hard drive:
1 Remove all CDs and DVDs from the disc drives, disconnect all USB devices
except the keyboard and mouse, then disconnect your Internet cable. If you can still run Windows, click Start, All Programs, System Recovery, System Recovery, then click Yes. Your computer restarts, then the System Recovery program starts.- OR -Turn on or restart your computer and press F11 while your computer is starting.3 Insert the Operating System Recovery CD/DVD when prompted. The System Recovery program starts.4 Click a system recovery option:??  Full System Restore (Destructive) reformats the hard drive and restores the system software as it was when you purchased your computer. This process deletes your data files. CautionThe Full System Restore option deletes allfiles on your hard drive except the restorefiles. Make sure that you back up allpersonal data files before continuing thisprocess.??  Full System Restore (with Backup) (recommended) moves the contents of the hard drive to the C:\My Backup folder and installs a new copy of Windows XP. This option saves your existing data files, but all programs must be reinstalled and the program settings reconfigured. You need at least 4 GB of hard drive space to use this restore option.5 Click Next. The System Restore - Format and Recover dialog box opens.6 Click Yes. Files are restored to your hard drive. When file recovery has finished, the System Restore dialog box opens. ImportantAfter you restore your system, it willappear with the same files and programsit had when it shipped from the factory. You still need to download Windowsupdates and antivirus updates to bringyour computer's software up to date.7 Click Restart. Your computer restarts, and Windows finishes its setup and installation.8 Reconnect your Internet cable and all USB peripheral devices. You are done.

Don't understand the computer (inner workings)

You said you removed the virus.
Then you must scan from spyware, adware etc.
If still not able to go to the internet, use Hijackthis to remove any change made to your Internet Explorer.
RECOMMENDATION:
Once you have your computer working properly again, install Pc Laptop Guard, so you won't have to go thru this hassle again
