HOW DO YOU CLEAN THE DRUM
The surface of the drum has a chemical coating that the toner sticks to if it gets scratched it will damage it. If you are getting grayish printed pages then that indicated that the drum coating is wearing off and the drum needs to be replaced.
I have a Brother HL-3040CN
Drum might need cleaning or replacement.

Hi
3 issues might be the problem.
1. The toner waste compartment is full. You need to clean the toner waste compartment located in the cartridge itself.
2. Roller drum inside the cartridge have lines normally starts on both ends of the drum. This due to bulky printing. Check and replace this parts inside the toner cartridge. Manual cleaning is not advisable because the result will still the same. If you have only toner cartridge, use the roller drum and replace in place of it.
3. Faulty Toner Cartridge that cause leaking the toner powder. If you purchase remanufactured toner cartridge or you refill the toner cartridge. It tends to worn out the parts. Normally starts as roller drum and follows with the other parts. Replace new original Toner Cartridge. When you refill the toner cartridge, you need to clean the waste compartment as well as it will later be full and overflow.

If not the toner, it will be the fuser unit, these are quite expensive however, you would certainly expect it to last more than 586 pages.
Luckily you say it is only 6 months old, the best advice in this instance would be to ring Brother and get it repaired under warranty.
I appreciate this may not be the answer you seek, however I would be providing poor advice to advise anything else on a product under warranty.
Drum error, i replaced all drums, still says drum

It is possible that the new toner is faulty. A replacement may fix the problem. Otherwise, the printer may have a fault that results in inaccurate toner volume, etc...
In most printers there is a workaround.
You can probably navigate the menus and override the notification system.
Consult your user manual for turning off the alerts for low or empty toner.
Sometimes this is listed under "supplies" or some such verbage.
If you no longer have your manual, you may find one on brothers website under their support section.
Cheers!
How do I reset the color toner cartridges?
Hey, I've just figured this out myself. Here is the procedure:
1. Open the front cover that gives you access to the toners.
2. Press and hold "Secure Print" and "Cancel" at the same time. You will see "K-TNR-STD" display on the screen.
3. Using the "+" and "-" buttons select the toner you want to reset.
4. Press the "Ok" button.
5. It will display "Ok?" and hit the "Ok" button again to reset the toner.
6. Close the lid.
All done!
