Has it always been that way, or just recently. Most garage doors will open for about 100 or 200 feet away. If it just started, you can replace the remote battery. Hope this helps.

You might have to reprogram the remote to sync up with the opener. The instructions will be in the owners manual. Some have a button on the rear or side of the motor unit you push while pressing the remote. The sequence is critical to the unit learning the remote code.

You should not have to reset the code. Simply remove the old battery and insert the new one, being careful to observe the polarity when you replace the new battery, and you should be good to go. The batteries can be obtained at most Wal-Marts, Radio Shacks and even through eBay if you know the correct number. Thay are lithium and will last a few years under normal use.

Is the garage remote infra red or radio? Does the universal remote support both modes of operation? If it's infra red then simply follow the programming instructions for the universal as normal. If RF then you may need another type of universal remote control that supports RF modes
