Trying to get the VCR/DVD recorder to record shows from direct tv using HDMI

You can not use HDMI to connect to a recorder due to blu-ray rules of no high quality recording being allowed. The only way to record off of Direct TV is to use audio and video cables (red, white and yellow. You also may need something like a videostabiizer etc. to do the job. IT IS ALL ABOUT THE MONEY!!!!!!!!

When powering up it starts then shuts off in about 5 seconds?

Fault at its main digital board. Short circuited component/s at it. Contact any service technician; or the authorized service center. If you wish to get some details; check the site linked here. Pull up older posts. http://electronicshelponline.blogspot.com/ In most cases, the main board might have to be replaced. If so, a software [firmware] update too might be necessary. //

Why can't I get the DVD drawer to open to insert a DVD?

could be many things. Try unplugging the machine and then power it up again to see if this resets it. If the machine was moved around with a disc in it, it could be out of place and jam the machine. there should be an eject button on the machine itself and one on the remote, make sure you try them both, if the button works on the machine then the button on the remote may be toast, same with the other way around. good luck.
