Always hang my pc when i insert my hard drive

Sounds like maybe the data is corrupt. But it could be the case electronics. I don't use external drives in the cases long...I buy the cable kits, take the drive out of the manufacturer's case, and plug the case directly into the USB port with the cable...they work MUCH better that way. And I always have my data in more than one place. So what you do depends on if it this is the only place you have the data, or, if this is a backup for data that you have elsewhere. If it's a backup, you can erase it, format it, and run the backup over again and get a clean set of data. If you want information on the direct-connect cables, get one of these: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2329300&CatId=3770 That's what I use, and it's a life saver a thousand times over. Also, one more thing; Sometimes what people misinterpret as a computer freezing is just the machine reading/loading data...and sometimes people just get impatient and don't wait for it long enough. If you have indexing turned on on your computer, and you connect a large drive, it may be trying to index the whole thing. And one last thing...sometimes people fill the drives too full. If the drive is over 96-97% full...it will lock up and never load. The only solution for that is formatting and starting over unless you have a norton 360 tool that can help recover it or something. Never over-fill a hard drive. It's the worst thing you can do.

Have a Toshiba 500GB external hard drive, model:

Sounds like some kind of bad wire, you hope. It could be a power issue as you have stated, I would try it out on several diffrent computers, and you were not wrong in trying the y cable. But if that still doesnt work then not all is lost. I would recomend opening up the caseing and removing the hard drive. Even external drives simply use standard laptop SATA drives. If you have a desktop you can simply plug in the drive while your computer is off, if you do not have xtra spots to plug it up you could temp unpulg your dvd drive to test it. If you have a laptop than you can buy several devices to use a sata drive though usb. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817153071&cm_re=usb_sata_docking_station-_-17-153-071-_-Product

This is the one I use the most.
Good luck , if you have any questions let me know

My Toshiba HDDR500E04XL 500 GB causes my pc to

An external storage-device has four major components:

* the USB cable

* the power-adapter

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

One of these components has failed.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.

Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status", to see if they will replace the device, at minimal cost to you.

There exist commercial "data recovery" services that can try to repair your device, just long-enough to rescue and copy your files. For example, see: https://services.seagate.com/index.aspx?lng=en-US for a "no data - no charge" guarantee.

I dropped my toshiba HDD320E03X,

Hello.

Extract the hard drive from the case and connect it to a USB2.0 IDE data cable and AC supply. See if the drive is recognizable.

If not, depending how valuable your data, there are data recovery services in the marketplace, but they are generally expensive and cannot guarantee success.

Hope this helps.
