Polk Audio PSW202 subwoofer.

Fuse probably went bad because either the large filer capacitors at the edge of the PCB went bad and or the final output IC mounted on the heatsink(15 pin) fried. Check the capacitors and all the semiconductor components on the board for burn marks or corrosion. You have to remove the heat sink clamp from in front of the output IC to adequately visualize its condition. In fact you might have to remove the large aluminum heatsink attached to the chassis to get a good view of the IC. If it or the heat sink clamp show signs of thermal burns you need to replace it. The IC is a TS TDA7294 mono audio amp available at Mouser Electronics. Replace the 35V 4700mF caps with 50V 4700mF caps. You will only have enough space on the top of the PCB for one of the larger caps. I mounted the other on the circuit side of the board. Note the polarity of the original caps and respect it in their replacements. The fuse is a 5 X 20 medium speed slow blow 250V 2.0A glass fuse.

Loud hum when speaker is

  • A couple of things.
  • Trey plugging it in to a different outlet and see if that helps. You could be getting a ground loop.
  • If this did not helps then next get inside the box and check the wire connectors. Make sure none have come loose. Be real sure. Also if you are hooking any of the other speakers to the sub (rather than using the receiver) then make sure to remove them ALL so that the sub is stand alone. This will make sure that the amp/sub is at fault and not some other speakers that you may have connected to the back of the sub.
  • Make sure the low pass phase is set to about 120. Don't set it to high.
  • Make sure to check the RCA ports on the sub box as well. If one is shorting it will hum weather a receiver is hooked up or not.
  • Now all that I have listed is the easy checks. If None of the work then the problem will be a filter capacitor on the power supply board has gone bad. You have to remove each one out of the board and test it for polarity and replace as necessary. This is what I think it is already but I always advise checking the obvious before going to the circuit board. If you have not done much soldiering or circuitry work I may suggest you get a friend to help. Some of them big capacitors running on AC can hold a deadly charge if the bleeder resistors malfunction.
  • This is a fixable unit for sure though.

  • Good luck to you and thank you for using FixYa.

So you're saying one source makes it crackle and another source doesn't. That suggest the sub is fine and we should examine the source and it's signal path. Please elaborate as much as you can on what it it/they are.

It is a 3A/250V fuse, also known as a 6A/125V fuse.

Power amps generally have slow blow fuses.

Polk subwoofer suddenly quit--the on-light doesn't even come on

most likely it is just the main in line fuse that could of went bad an thats cheap an easy to replace look for the fuse housing should have a flat tip screw driver groove just tun it counter clockwise an it will come out they are spring loaded so it will only take a half a turn to remove it then copy down the fuse type an amps an go get a new one an try it then u can se if the fuse is bad just buy looking at it if its metal binding is broken then get a new one if you can not see into the fuse then read it w/a ohms meter to see if its bad

My sub is making a rattling sound. I dont know

First pick it up and shake it, to see if something is loose inside it!
Sometimes the speaker cone can become damaged. If you can get at it, gently press it so it moves up & down. Don't press it from the side, just apply force all over. It should just move without scraping. If it doesn't the cone is damaged.
