There may be a issue with the assembly, blu-ray plays with more precision and speed, for some reason it is not slowing down to play the regular DVD's may be a padder motor problem.

The problem is in the laser pickup assembly, or the video processor ic is the issue, either way cheaper to replace the player.

check the back of the player to see if the power cord has come loose, some units have a removable cord and it can get pulled.
