distorted sound can be the speakers itself, it can also be the main processor for audio, if you have tried to change the sound settings and this does not help i would think its the speakers as some times they become damaged and split away from the magnet.

First thinkg I'd do is to connect an external monitor to the laptop to see if you can get an image, any image, during booting.
