If your external dvd drive is not detected by windows 7 here is one thing you can try.
1. click on start then on the search field type "regedit". This should open the registry editor
2. on registry editor click on the arrow next to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
3. next click on the arrow next to SYSTEM
4. click on the arrow next to CurrentControlSet
5. then click on the arrow next to Control
6. click on the arrow next to Class
7. now click on 4D36E966-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318 (note that this time you need to click on the folder itself
8. Look at the right pane of the registry editor the look for "upper filters" and "lower filters" entries. (note that you could find either one or both of these entries)
after deleting both keys restart the system and check if it would detect the external dvd drive.

Cd/Dvd writter is also known as RAM (Random Access Memory). no need to worry about it. If u face any problem with that just go to its property nd update its driver in hardware section. Or just chk bios
