Unfortunatly it is likely a bad drive, a loose internal connection, or a dieing motherboard. Go to dell.com and ensure that all your chipset drivers are up to date, if that doesn't fix it you will likely have to either RMA or, if it is out of warranty, take it to a repair shop.

It may be due to the loose contact of the cables connected to the drive, if the tray ejects that means it receives power, tightining the cables should resolve the issue

This is a relatively common problem with all dvd players. The problem is that either the lens has become dirty or the lens has burnt out.

If the lens is dirty , you have two relatively easy options to fix this. The first option is to go to your local music/electronics store and ask them for a cd/dvd lens cleaner kit. This kit consist of a CD with one or two little brushes on it , and a lens cleaning solution.

You simply put a drop of solution on each of the brushes and then insert the cd/dvd in the dvd player. Play this disc for about 5 min and then try one of your normal disks. Repeat a few times if this does not solve your problem immediately.

Open your drive and power off your laptop.Then locate the lens in the tray of the drive.

Borrow some nail varnish REMOVER (not varnish, believe me , someone has made that mistake before) and put a drop on a cotton ear tip.

Gently in a circular motion clean the lens. Do not press against the lens , just balance the cotton ear tip on the lens with your fingers.

Now take another cotton tip and pull on the cotton to loosen it up a bit. Gently dry the lens in the same manner as you did the cleaning. Make sure no pieces of cotton got stuck near the lens after drying.

Then try your drive again.

If you followed either one or both of these steps and the unit will still not read a disc , the lens has blown and will have to be replaced. Depending on your unit , this will cost about half of the cost of a new player if it is available on the market so I would suggest you replace the unit all together.

Hi ravi_kuma108 i have the same problem you described in a similar laptop. did you find a solution or clue about it? I only can guess its a bottom flex-cable connector or top flex-cable connector problem. If you had something you can share i will be apreciated.

if it has a DVDRW drive the yes.........if CDRW/DVD then no.....but it can read dvds

its rubber or that band might have got torned off or damaged..try replacing it..

Go to www.dell.com and download all of the drivers for your laptop and install them.

This feature needs to be enabled in CMOS, before you could configure in windows.

Seems like graphics card problem.

It may be that the card needs to be reseated (don't do it yourself if you have not done it before).

If it is a software problem, then following procedure may correct it.

Restart the computer and right after tap F8 key continuously.
You will see advanced boot menu.
Use up/down key on keyboard and select Last Known Good Configuration and hit enter
It should boot you up.

If that does not work, do the above procedure and instead of Last known select "Safe mode" from the list. Log into your account and click "No", it will show you system restore window, You can try to restore the computer to an earlier date when it was working fine.
