50:1 But if your doing mostly low rpm cruising (trolling) then you could reduce that a bit to 75:1 to help reduce smoke. If you do mostly mid to higher rpm cruising, then 50:1 (1 pint to 6 gallons. ) Or 200mls in 20 liters if your Canadian.

Have your spark plugs changed AND carbs cleaned and adjusted. Usually that can also be caused by a seized advance system ( plate under the flywheel, commanded to turn with the throttle linkage... )

2 possibilities: -1 Your head gasket is burned. Caution, some Mercury engines have no head gaskets. I could tell if I had your serial number. -2 Your cylinder has seized. If it's the upper cylinder, you'll have also to check your cooling system! Look at your spark plug if you can't see some 'aluminum' deposit on it. Or, inspect the inside of that cylinder with an endoscope. Such an old engine is mostly not worth a complete overhaul. So, in case of seizing, just hone that 1 cylinder and use a new piston with rings. It's in any case better not to use that engine in this state.

fuel goes in at connector then to fuel pump then to carbs ! remove connector off fuel line and prime fuel up so you know you got fuel ! then reconnect to engine and prime up again till you see filter filling and bulb should harden , then remove a drain screw from carb bowl and prime again and see if fuel comes out of all carb drains ! if yes then start engine with or in water with kill lanyard on if ok then good ! not then check sparks on all plugs putting them against the head for earth and crank to check ! if ok then i would remove carbs and clean the jets etc ! compressions 100psi or more on all cylinders ! less means recon pistons etc !

Then two Deep Cycle Gel Batteries, one for the marine electronics, fish finder etc, and another that powers the front bow mounted Trolling motor. You will find them in the deck lockers. Open them, release any tie downs, undo the cables and lift them out for Winter storage. I keep mine in my garage and I put them on a battery minder for 24 hours once a month. check water flow pump fail -corrosion--debris blockage---check fluids--gear oil etc

Commonly caused by clogged air filter. Also suspect buildup in exhaust mixing elbow. Smoke will build up carbon deposits over time and clog them. What color is the smoke? unburnt fuel will smoke and cause heat. Could be a fuel pump or dirty/bad injector not atomizing fuel correctly. If smoke is steam.... If there isn't proper flow or there is air in raw water system, the air hits heat exchanger and immediately turns to steam. Will result in overheating.

It's electronic fuel injection so it needs power to run. Mercury is usually a yellow wire from stator that goes to a voltage regulator that charges battery when running. Good luck!!

check continuity on float switch to assure it's working. do you have it wired like this?
