Thread keeps wadding around the metal post at the back and above of the bobbin case

Sounds like there is fuzz trapped somewhere around the bobbin or race. That often happens when you clean a machine. You may need to take the face plate off and gently remove thread or fabric that might be hung inside. Look carefully in and around the bobbin and race and gently remove any debris you find.Count to 10 and grin.

Where can I find service manual

Hi Catherine, I'm not sure if this is the manual you need, but there's a free one for a white 1740 "quilters" model available through the Singer website, strange as it may seem. (In fact you can find free manuals for many White brand sewing machines via the Singer website.) Look under Singer's "Support and Resouces" then select "Instruction manuals" , or follow this link: http://www.singerco.com/support/instruction-manuals On the Instructions Manual page you'll see it says "Find Your Manual - Step 1, Step 2 etc etc" and under that there's a search box that says "Model Number" Into this search box just type "w" (don't type "white", because that doesn't work) You'll be taken to a near incomprehensible results page but scroll down and you'll see there are two listed as W1740 Good luck, and I hope you find what you need :) Kind regards Kura Instruction Manuals

Thread keeps slipping out of the first thread guide while sewing causing the tension to be off

try using a small piece of tape on the thread guide and see if thathelps the thread to stop coming out of the thread guide.

I have this White model

The looping/bunching of fabric will occur when doing free motion quilting and etc. You might be able to do what we do: use Wonder Under under your fabric and the bobbin thread shouldn't bunch up like it is doing right now.

Hope that helps.

As I sew my bobbin

Sounds like one of two things. One easy, one more difficult. The most likely issue is that out is a simple birdnesting. Increase your tension on your upper thread, and verify your bobbin tension has not somehow changed. In a drop-in bobbin, there is a screw in the area where you tuck the thread through, in a traditional bobbin casing, it is the screw on the side of the casing itself. It should have just enough tension that you can tell it is pulling the thread ever-so-slightly. If this were the case, the jumping you hear is from the thread being yanked our of the bobbin faster than it can handle. These tension problems are the #1 issue in problem sewing-happens to everyone. Second possibility is that the bobbin casing area has somehow been scratched, which is causing your problem. Visually inspect to see if there are any marks. If there are, buff then out with a low-grit sandpaper until smooth. If the marks are too deep to remove, you need to replace that part. Generally speaking, it is an inexpensive part and an average do-it-yourselfer can complete it. If this is the car, let me know and I can walk you through it. A repair shop would probably charge $40-60 for the repair, plus the part cost. Let me know if this helps!

The small bar that holds the zipper foot on broke.

There will be several zipper feet available at any of the sewing machine stores. You can either take the broken foot with you (or another foot for the machine) or note the shank length and the bar length on the foot. I believe the White uses a low shank foot. In that case, you would get a foot that is designed as a low shank foot (assuming the bar isn't narrower than your current foot), and it will work.

The common Foot styles are low, high and slant.

I hope this helps.

(you can also order sewing machine feet online but you need to know the style of how the foot connects to the machine. The easiest way to do that is to compare it to similar feet in a local store. Most of the online vendors will list the machine brands that are compatible with a given foot. However, I know that Husqvarna low shank feet have changed width over the past 30 years and thus not all of the feet from a new machine are mutually compatible with those for an older machine. So I wouldn't guarantee the match without seeing the feet side by side.)
