How do you take apart the ge dryer model

Hi bprobst660...
Here is a little more than you asked for but, I thought that once you have it apart you might as well do a little service to it to save having problems in the near future.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ALWAYS UNPLUG YOUR DRYER BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO DO ANY WORK ON IT.
If you have to check/replace/repair your drum motor, drum seals, belt, rollers, etc.
If replacing drum seals be sure to use a good grade of weather proof cement to hold the seal/s in place, some seals are furnished with the cement to glue it in place.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Note: This method works for most front loading machines.
Remove the electrical console that holds the timer switch, start switch, etc. from the top of the dryer if necessary. Be real careful not to knock any of the wires off of the timer switch or other electrical connections.
Remove the lint filter and the two screws that hold the filter housing to the top of the dryer lid.
Then remove the top of the dryer by inserting a screwdriver between the top and frame on each side of the dryer lid in the front to pop the lid up from the retaining clips.
Note: Some of the tops tilt backwards on a type of hinge and do not have to be removed completly.
Remove the front of the machine by disconnecting the door switch and removing the two screws located on either side of the dryer frame.
Move the door and front of machine forward to remove.
This will expose the belt, idler bracket and drum, remove the drum and belt and this will expose the drum rollers, idler arm bracket with pulley, and motor with pulley. Pay attention to the route of the belt, this will come in handy when you go to reinstall the belt and drum.
Sometimes the belt will slip off of the idler arm or motor causing the drum not to turn.
Note:The way the belt goes back on is, as the belt comes off the drum has to be doubled (pushed together to form a loop) and goes under the idler pulley then to the motor pulley.

While you have the drum out, I would recommend that you lubricate the drum rollers at the shaft of the roller with a good grade of machine oil like 3 in One oil or a vasoline type of lubricant. This will save you a problem later with the rollers getting noisy, also check your drum rollers for flat spots, if they have flat spots on them this will cause a thumping type noise. You will need to replace the drum rollers if they have flat spots on them.

Dryer gets warm and tumbles but clothes do not

Since this is an electric dryer, if it gets warm, that usually means that the heater is working. The drum tumbles so that tells you the motor is working. Which leaves a few things. Clogged exhaust vents could cause it, and even a dirty lint trap could effect it. But on your GE I would most suspect either the thermostat that is located in the dryer blower unit (http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/part-number/GE-Parts/Dryer-Parts/WE04X10028/0026/363/Model-DVL223EB6WW/0432/0151200?keySuffixId=NA&pathTaken=partSearch&pathRender=modelComponent&documentCompId=G0407006&diagramPageId=00004&productTypeId=0151200&searchModelNumber=DVL223EB6WW&subCompDesc=Motor&brandDesc=GE&modelDesc=ELECTRIC-DRYER&blt=11) or the blower unit itself. Now remember that the blower is driven by the motor (which also turns your drum - so the thermostat becomes the most likely suspect. It is 1315 on the parts breakdown to give you an indication of where it is located.

I have a DVL223EB6ww that

Hello, welcome to FixYa.

I'll start by saying your post indicates it is a GE dryer model DVL223EB6WW "making terrible noise".

First this is an unusual one...I mean the model. It is a GE, however it is built by Frigidaire...that is not very common, aside from front load washer's GE had built by Frigidaire. Many times store brands such as Kenmore, Beaumark, Viking and the like are made by large appliance manufacturer's, but it's less common for major manufacturer's to have machines built for them by other manufacturer's as is the case here.

I digress. I'll start by addressing your question "Can bearings go bad or be replaced in this motor" ?

Yes they can and do wear out/go bad, but they cannot be replaced unfortunately...aside from the entire motor of course.

Here is a link which will direct you to both the motor for your model as well as a good tutorial on changing it. There are some slight differences, but essentially the same as yours. (based on the model number you posted)

http://www.repairclinic.com/PartDetail/Drive-Motor/WE17X10001/275429

Having said all this, once you've gained access to the inside of the cabinet, look for obstruction around the blower wheel or a loose/broken blower wheel...it could be a simple repair even if unlikely.

Thank you for choosing FixYa. I'll need to watch for your reply before moving forward.

Regards,

Macmarkus :)

How do you get top or front of cabinet off?

There are small clips between the top and the front cabinet. You need to use a bright light to find them, then use something like a small putty knife to go in between and release them. After that you will see how to take off the front. Hope this helps.

Start button buzzes when pressed,

I assume the buzzing quit when you release the start button. Open the dryer door and slowly rotate the dryer drum in a counterclockwise (CCW) direction. Rotate the drum 2-3 revolutions and then shut the door and see if it will start. If it continues to just hum and not start could indicate a voltage issue, motor issue or a friction issue. Open the door again and locate the door switch plunger in the upper or lower corner on the hinge side of the drum opening. Hold the plunger in while someone begins rotating the drum counterclockwise. While turning the drum counter clockwise and holding the door switch plunger inwards press the start button. If it starts, there is likely a friction problem or motor problem.

My ge dvl223ebww electric dryer

Do an inspect. themobilian_2149.jpg
The top will come on off. Check the drum glides for wear
themobilian_2150.jpg
Once them glides wear out yall will be pinching the drum and causing motor stall.
With the top off you can sometimes push start and give it a little help to get it going and then listen out for signs of wear to the glides and bearing in the rear.

Most drying problems are with air flow if the clothes are actually getting dry after multiple cycles. Make sure the air flow is not obstructed by checking where the air comes out on the exterior of your home. The inside of the dryer may need to be cleaned out as well.
