My dryer shuts off before its time and not heating

Model? On a model I just repaired here's what I found: Model: 110.69422801 Kenmore Electric No heat. although sometimes it had heat for a short time. Suspected that the heating element was faulty (i.e. cracked heating coil). Nope. Checked hi and lower thermostats and both were good. Took apart timer controller. Found that the contacts inside were worn/burnt. Item is designed to fail. Slightly bent one of the contacts to make better contact and it is working. Ordered new timer/controller ($45 including shipping from "One Appliance" on line). Easy to replace. ALWAYS disconnect the power when servicing!!!

Kenmore dryer 80 series wont heat. what to check

Hi rmalone0929...

Here are a few things to check:
ALWAYS UNPLUG YOUR DRYER BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO DO ANY WORK ON IT.
Check to make sure you are getting full 220 Volt power to the dryer, if you are then:
Check your Wiring
Often the main wiring connection from the house, at the dryer, burns and the connection breaks. If this has happened to your dryer, you need to replace the power cord and the terminal block inside the dryer to which the wire is attached.
Check the Door Switch
If the door switch or the door-switch actuator is defective, the dryer won't work and you need to replace the failed component. The switch is inside the dryer main housing near the door frame. Sometimes you need to raise or open the top or front of the dryer to reach the switch. Check for continuity you should have none with door open, and should have a reading when closed. If not replace the door switch.
Check to make sure you heating problem is not a lint build up in the discharge hose or the dryer,as this condition can cause heater/thermistor problems such as overheating of the heating coil leading to failure of the coil and burnout of the thermostat/thermistor due to overheat.
Remove the back/or front just under the door of the machine and try to locate the air duct going from the blower to the drum. Normally inside/outside the air duct you will find the heating coil and the thermostats/thermistors. Once you have located the heating coil, remove the two wires from it and check the coil with an ohm meter across the two terminals of the coil.
You should read continuity across the terminals, if not you will need to replace the coil as it is faulty.
If the heating coil is ok, then:
You can check the thermostat/thermistor one at a time by removing the two wires and taping them together with electrical tape.
If the coil heats up then replace the thermostat/thermistor/thermal fuse as it is faulty.
If you have an ohm meter then you can test the thermostat/thermistor/thermal fuse,
then you do not have to tape the wires together as described above.
To test your thermostat/thermistor/thermal fuseremove the wires from the thermostat/thermistor/thermal fuse and check for continuity, if you DO NOT have continuity then replace the thermostat/thermistor/thermal fuse.
DO NOT LEAVE THE WIRES TAPED TOGETHER AFTER THE TEST AS THIS COULD CAUSE A FIRE BECAUSE YOU HAVE REMOVED THE SAFETY.

If the thermal fuse overheats the dryer will not operate. It's located on the blower housing. It cannot be reset. A vent clogged with lint can cause it to overheat. You can test it with an Ohm meter or continuity checker, if no continuity, replace it.
Right after replacing a dryer element, always run the dryer on 'air fluff' / 'no heat', and go outside to verify there's plenty of air coming out your vent system.
If the vent's clogged, that new element can burn out very quickly.

you will need to pull the top back panel off the dryer, in the left hand upper corner there should be a booklet that has the wiring diagram, but without being there and having voltage at the motor and it not working then I would say yes it needs a working motor, eBay is probably the cheapest unless you know of a appliance repair shop, as they will sell used motors as well. How do I get to the heating element?

Not sure on your particular model but most, that I have replaced, are accessible from a back panel. Hint: Before you start... use a camera (digital) to record your steps, so rebuild becomes easier. Also to the preventive maintenance while you are taking things apart. disconnect the exhaust, unplug the unit, clean all parts of lint, and finally check the belt. A DIY person can handle this task. Also before you begin check for the availability of the replacement element, which will give you some hints as to its installation.

Since you have got that far... stop for a moment. Take a few photos of what you are doing, to help you rebuild the unit. You can test the motor without taking it all apart. Does the drum turn, by hand, relatively easily? If so, Good!
Does the drum turn when you start the dryer (I use the cold air setting for these tests)? If so, Good!
When you start the dryer (on cold air) do you hear the sound of the motor, but no drum rotation? If so then it maybe that the motor is good but the belt is broken or has frayed and is slipping; then the belt needs replacement.
Disconnect the dryer exhaust hose.... When you start the dryer (on cold) do you feel any air movment from the exhaust? If so then I think it is just the belt not the motor. If no air movement then it is probably the motor. A replacement motor cost approx. $165.00.

My Kenmore 80 Series electric

Hi, their is 2 possible cause the first and most likely cause is going to be the belt is slipping and getting hot and causing the smoke, this could be due to the belt being loose or the drum bearing may be seizing and could need replacing. try turning the drum by hand to see how easy it is.

now the second problem could be that the motor is over heating due to the drum bearing failing or even the motor itself failing, see how easy it is to turn the drum if its quite easy and feels smooth then the chances are the belt needs replacing, if its stiff to turn or feels rough then this could be drum bearing or motor failing.

let me know if you need further assistance ok

plz rate this solution as i have a whole page of unrated posts, thanks
