The oven doesn't get hot

When a gas oven doesn't get hot, it generally means that it isn't receiving gas, the gas valve isn't distributing gas to the oven burner, or the ignition system—either an electronic ignition or pilot light—isn't working properly. A common problem with ovens that have a pilot light is that the pilot light has gone out. Note: Gas ranges younger than 10 years old have a sophisticated fault code system that governs their ignition. Always call an approved warranty service provider to handle problems with these ranges.

Here's how to troubleshoot your gas range:

1) Be sure the controls are set to the proper setting.

2) Be sure the stove is plugged in, and/or check the circuit breaker or fuse that serves that circuit.

3) Check the gas valve to be sure the gas supply is turned on (also make sure the house's main gas valve is turned on).

4) On a stove with a pilot light, make sure the pilot light is burning. If it isn't, relight it as discussed in your owner's manual.

5) Adjust the pilot flame (older stoves only).

6) Turn off the gas, and unplug the stove (or turn off its circuit at the electrical panel).

7) Clean out the oven burner ports, using a stiff wire.

8) Plug in the stove (or turn on its circuit), and turn the gas back on. Relight the pilot (if it has one).

9) If the oven still doesn't work, go for service

I smell gas when gas supply is on. Have confirmed

Sounds like you need some gas grease in all 4 gas taps, they work on a taper.

GE jgs968 range seems to be working fine except

OK, it is likley that the oven ignitor isn't working and needs to be replaced. To verify if this is the problem, when you turn on the oven to BAKE and set the temp at say, 350. Watch through the window, (or you can have the door open). Look at the bottom, back, center and see if you see a bright orange glow appearing under the bottom panel.

If you don't, that is why the oven won't lit the gas. There is an ignitor for both the broiler burner at the top and for the bake burner in the oven compartment.

The good news is that your oven uses the same ignitor for both the broiler and bake burner tubes, so you could swap them if you wish to confirm that is the problem before you go and order/buy a new one. These aren't cheap at $91 bucks, but you can shop around the web for a better price if you determine you need one.

Please note that sometimes the ignitor burns out half way through but because it still lits/glows, people think it's OK, but it won't get hot enough to signal the gas valve to open and allow gas to ignite and get the oven cooking. That's why it's always a good idea to swap ignitors to verify you have a faulty one.

If you want to see what the part is for your oven, go to searspartsdirect.com and enter in your model number to view the line drawing for your oven along with the parts list.

Hope that helps and best regards!

Bake does not work but broiler does.

The reason that the temp display reverts to 100 degrees is because that is the lowest default temp setting for the display and until the oven temp actually starts to increase, it won't change. So the temp display is working correctly for the BAKE function.

Here's a line drawing showing the part you may need. Ignitor Part # WB13T10045. The good news is that your oven uses the same ignitor for both the broiler and bake burner tubes, so you could swap them if you wish to confirm that is the problem before you go and order/buy a new one. These aren't cheap at $91 bucks, but you can shop around the web for a better price if you determine you need one.

Hope this helps you out and remember to disconnect the oven from the electric power before performing any repair work. Best regards!

No Bake; everything else works

Hi, When you put the oven on bake, can you see the ignitor glowing but get no flame?
Sound like the ignitor might be getting weak and not opening the gas valve. Please let me know if this sounds like the problem.
It is common for the ignitor to go bad. Even if it glows, it can be bad.
Please let me know if I can assist you further.

Oven won't light, burners and broiler work

Here ya go...

The same method applies to both the broiler and bake manifold:

1. UNPLUG the range and turn the gas off if you have a local gas cut-out valve (it is recommended that you do).
2. Open oven door and remove (if possible). Refer to your owner’s manual to see if there are instructions on how to remove the oven door. Some have spring-loaded locking hinges, while others just lift out. If you cannot figure out how to remove the oven door, use care not to lean on the door or put too much weight on it. A common complaint following any kind of oven maintenance is that the oven door doesn’t shut correctly any longer. This is usually caused by bending the hinges or springs coming loose.
3. Remove the oven racks, and remove the oven pan. (There are usually two screws either in the back or front of the oven holding the pan in place).
4. Remove the Flame Spreader. This is a metal plate on top of the manifold.
5. The igniter will be mounted directly to the gas manifold. Follow the wires that lead to igniter. It will either be plugged into a connector, or be connected together with ceramic wire lugs. Your replacement igniter should come with extra ceramic wire lugs. In the event the plug does not match the one on your range, cut the wires and connect using the ceramic wire lugs. DO NOT use standard wire lugs, they are not heat resistant and will melt.
6. Unplug the old igniter and remove the mounting ***** holding it to the gas manifold.
7. Install new igniter on gas manifold using care not to handle the element on the igniter with your hands. The oil from your hands can cause damage and/or premature failure. The igniter is also considered FRAGILE.
8. Reconnect the wires using the recommendations mentioned in Step 5.
9. Plug in the range, turn the gas valve back on and do a visual test by setting the oven temperature to the desired range. Allow 30 – 90 seconds for the igniter to light the gas. Turn oven off and allow sufficient time to cool. If the oven has only been lit for a minute or so, the cool down period will be brief.
10. Reinstall the flame spreader, oven pan, and racks. Reinstall door if necessary.

NOTE: Most igniters cost around $50. Prices will vary with models. I hope this is the information you needed.

OVEN DOES NOT IGNITE

psweber look at the ignitor closely. If it is cracked, change it. Sometimes if won't crack and will be bad anyway. That is normally what fails on gas ranges.
