There is no mention of this in the user manual. You could just allow it to burn off the residue, if you can stand it (that's how self cleaning ovens do it). Or, perhaps you could get the entire model number and go to http://www.repairclinic.com/ to see if they have any information. They generally have complete exploded view diagrams of parts that will show you how it is assembled. I hope this is helpful.

take the screws out of vent and remove to clean inside the inter vent

There are many GE support forums and factory support sites. You might check first for a fuse inside (OVEN UNPLUGGED!)

If you don't see any screws on the front of the grille there should be 2-3 on the top of the oven.
