GE JVM1650 Microwave Suddenly Stops

Tami,
It isn't really difficult to replace... It's the 4000 Volts that go to it and the stored energy (voltage) in the high voltage capacitor that concerns me as far as telling you that it is a do it yourself repair. Also, and this a huge concern, is that after the magnetron tube is replaced, the microwave should be leak checked. A microwave leak detector that is certified is around $400. Now that I said that, I have rarely ever had one that leaked, but it is the law and that's the main reason that it needs to be done. I highly recommend calling GE Factory Service 1-800-432-2737 (1-800-GE Cares) to install the magnetron tube.

My microwave displays F3 Ge Spacemaker JVM1640WB005 what is it

F3 on a GE / Hotpoint microwave means you have a shorted membrane keypad.

If and when an oven is coming on or doing anything by itself, this is very dangerous and can result in a fire.

So until it is repaired, please leave it unplugged or leave the door open when it's not in use, and please do not leave it running unattended.

If you (or someone you know) might want to replace it yourself, I have uploaded a handy guide with pictures showing you what's typically involved.

You can usually find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

There should also be a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting & testing.

If you would like to have us do this repair for you, we do that for $39.95 plus part costs.

At our Web site, we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

Feel free to contact me directly (and please remind me of your model number) for more information & help.

How to change microwave bulb

If there's no obvious removable cover over the bulb (most often on the rear or side) and the owner's manual doesn't address it, then disassembly will be required.

Always unplug a microwave before removing or installing any bulbs.

If it's an over the range type, remove the vent grille across the top and see if bulbs can be accessed there. There may be a panel on the bottom covering the light(s), instead.

If not, chances are you'll have to remove it from the wall, then remove the outer cover. If so, the installation instructions are very handy, and it's best to have two people since the microwave can be heavy and awkward.

Once it's out of the wall, the outer cover (wrapper) will need to be removed, just as you'll need to do on a counter top model.

On a counter top model, be sure it's unplugged, but otherwise ignore the instructions above this paragraph.

The screws you need to remove should be pretty obvious, but a special driver (such as a T20H type or GTXH20-100) may be needed.

Be sure to put all the screws back in the right holes, since some may be special grounding screws.

Bulbs can be had in most grocery stores, hardware stores, home improvement centers, and big box or department stores.

Many models use halogen lamps. You must not touch the new one with your bare skin, as the oils will shorten the bulb life.

No power

The three items I would suspect are the 20A fuse on the filter board near where the power cord comes in, the magnetron thermostat, or the oven thermostat.

If those are good, would then you have a problem on the control circuit board, which
we regularly repair for customers nationwide by mail for $39.95 postpaid in about a week with a one-year guarantee.

We have the service manual for this model and have uploaded it to our site here to help you.

You will need the
free Acrobat Reader to view or print it in case you don't have it.

Accessing the oven thermostat for testing will require you to remove the oven from the wall.

If so, the installation instructions are very handy, and it's best to have two people since the microwave can be heavy and awkward.

L.G. / Goldstar owner's manuals can be downloaded here. If it doesn't show up in the search, I would call or e-mail them via the CONTACT US link at the top right.

Nite light doe's not function anymore

We see (and repair) this a lot. The problem is on the control panel, which we regularly repair nationwide by mail for $39.95 postpaid in about a week.

At our Web site, you can get details of our service, plus we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

This light failure often occurs when a bulb goes out and the filament shorts, or when the bulbs are removed or installed without first unplugging the oven from the power line. Either can cause such a failure on the controller.

This can often also affect the exhaust fan operation, too. The lights and fan can be inoperable or stuck on too.

Feel free to contact me directly (and please remind me of your full model number) for more information & help.

It is the control panel. You can actually just replace the circuit board on the control panel and it should fix this.

Oven turns off completely

First of all, yes, the charcoal filter should generally be replaced every 6-12 months, or as otherwise specified in your owner's manual.

If the filter clogs, that will block air flow, which is critical to keeping the magnetron cool and safe.

If the magnetron overheats, its thermostat trips, shutting off power to the oven until it cools back to a safe level.

You can remove the filter, then try the oven a couple of times.

If it works right, then you know it's the filter.

If it still fails, then your fan may be out or the magnetron may just be dying.

Also check and be sure your air filters are clean. They can be washed, while the charcoal types cannot.

You can order new filters here.

No power

The problem is most likely in the door latch circuitry. This is an expensive repair. Consider replacing the unit. If the door latch is not repaired correctly, very dangerous microwave energy can be released. This is not a do-it-yourself project. New ovens are very reasonable.

Hopefully you didn't disturb the hinges to remove the door, since that will require alignment and testing to be sure it is not leaking.

Normally you have to separate the door panels (as shown in the attached photo) and then you'll see the previously hidden screws you need to remove.

Or you can watch a YouTube video (not a video I made) that demonstrates how it's done.

You can usually find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

GE Microwave JVM1650 - not heating

If it's been arcing for years, I would suspect your waveguide is damaged and cannot be repaired in addition to the magnetron.

You would have to pay labor. It's generally about $75 to visit you and $90 to do the work.

GE Customer Service is here in case you want to see if they will cover labor or replace the oven, but I doubt it.

Good luck.
