It may be that the internal cooling fan is not working or the filters or air duct may be clogged, but it may also be a "noisy" magnetron.

First, check the filters. Then determine if the internal cooling fan is coming on.

I do not mean the hood vent exhaust fan which you can turn on and off manually.

I'm instead talking about the internal fan which comes on automatically whenever you microwave.

We have a sound clip of what a microwave should sound like when the cooling fan and high voltage section are working.

If that is working, and you have good air flow, then see this FixYa solution.

chances are you have a bad magnetron, this is a repair best left to an expert, these components operate at extremely high voltages

probably a defective magnetron; very common for this vintage microwave. there are usually generic magnetrons available; as the original GE part will be expensive.

99% of the time i have encountered this problem you need to replace the motor that the fan rotors sit on. other than that one i have encountered had a sensor attatched to the circuit leading to the motor

2 things come to mind, 1)check the door limit switches. also make sure the switches are switching at the same time. Or very possible to board is faulty. All the signals and commands come from the board. Electronic control goes faulty and things wont switcjh off.

Use a pair of needle nose pliers if you have them or wear a pair of leather gloves. Just grab the base and unscrew it.

We see (and repair) this a lot. The problem is on the control panel, which we regularly repair nationwide by mail for $39.95 postpaid in about a week or so.

This light failure often occurs when a bulb goes out and the filament shorts, or when the bulbs are removed or installed without first unplugging the oven from the power line. Either can cause such a failure on the controller.

This can often also affect the exhaust fan, cooling fan, turntable, and/or inside light operation, too.

Details of our service are at our Web site, along with a video showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

Feel free to contact me directly with your brand, full model number and symptoms.

it may have been the hi voltage at the magnetron, but the shut down is your heat thermocouple mounted on the magnetron side and when the mag overheats this thermocouple opens up and shuts off power to the mag to prevent overheating and fire

GE JVM1650 1000... | Answered on Apr 18, 2010

There's a safety thermostat attached to the cooking cavity in most ovens to detect when something overheats. Once they operate they cut off power to the rest of the oven. These are usually non-resettable, and need to be replaced to repair the oven. If there wasn't any damage done to the interior of the oven you can see about having the repair made.

Find the breaker for it (a double for 220) and substitue a single breaker (for 110). This will leave one wire unused from the breaker box to the outlet. You'll have to change the outlet of course to accommodate a normal 110 plug. You can also skip the breaker part and just change the outlet and cap off 1 of the hot wires. Just make sure to kill the power and be safe!

Yes. There is an installation manual available for this model listed at managemylife.com. Just type in the model number under the "Manuals" link and the installation manual is available in .pdf (Adobe) format that you can download or print for FREE. Ductwork installation instructions for outside rear exhaust and outside top exhaust are listed. I hope this helps you.

magnetron is leaking internally, do not use until magnetron is replaced. the mag creates interference with the control board and resets it

GE JVM1650 1000... | Answered on Feb 28, 2010

might just be magnetron and diode and thats not to terrible cost wise but if the smoke is real heavy the transformer may be burned as well and its not worth it then. mag & diode price with labor should only be $150-180 and add on an extra $120 for transformer
