The model number of your humidifier will help to answer this accurately, but I believ the stick points upwards on models that starts with HCM -XXX

Humidifier not working on furnace
Hi,
Please check the bellow article to verify for any bad installation in page 4.
http://www.airkinglimited.com/airkingca/admin/article_instructions/6000IO.pdf
The major reason for the humidifier furnace not working is due to a bad humidistat, fan switch or float switch--problems that take specialized equipment to diagnose. But before you call in a pro, it's worth your time to test the fan motor and float assembly, since repairing them is something you can handle on your own. Let us know if you were looking of something else.

Can trusteam be installed in return duct with
Hi,
With the remote kit all you need is a small hole to get into the supply duct. That should be possible in most any situation.
The problem you will have if you install it into the return is that the steam could cause corrsion inside the furnace, and or cause problems with the blower motor, from the extra moisture.
If I would chose to install in the return duct I would want at least 6-10 ft. of duct and an elbow before the furnace to assure that the air fully absorbs the steam before it gets to the furnace. I would then monitor the blower compartment to check for moisture building up in there.
If you do not have it here is the manual that shows the prefered installation and how the remote works.

Too much humidity in house water sitting on
Adjust your humidistat to lower humidity level. If you do not have a humidistat, get one and install following mfg guidelines. Home Depot sells one for about $30

How can I clean the metal grid in the humidifier?
the most practical solution is install a new evaporative pad every year. But if you would like to squeeze "a little" extra life out of the pad . Try soaking it in a solution of 1 part white vinegar to 2 parts water.

Why does my Aprilaire humidifier gurgle?
Mine was doing the same thing...first month of operation (installed toward end of heating season) = no problems with noise (bubbling, gurgling) though the duct work - started second year toward middle of season. Now its been running for a few weeks and is intolerable. I dug out owners manual and it did not address this at all. I dug out the installation manual and viola! Gurgling is caused by excess condensation in the steam hose. Sure enough the steam hose had a small area depression and did NOT have the constant downward slope necessary - installation instructions are VERY specific about needing a slope in order to allow condense to drain from the steam house. The zip-tie installation had slide down from a vertical stabilizing pipe & allowed for the hose to sag in the middle (nice install job slacker). I adjusted it and the SOUND IS GONE. Hope this helps someone else.
