Trouble turning on

This sounds like a very common issue. If set is hard to turn on (takes several tries)but will eventually turn on hereis what my guess would be.Every set has a standby power supplythat is running 7/24 if the set is plugged in and it supplies voltage to theremote circuit that turn on the main power supply for the tv and hence turn theset on.This is an area where companies cut corners by using lower rated voltage caps.By this I mean Standby usually provides under 10 volts to trigger the seton----what they do is use filter caps rated at say 10 volts max in a circuitwith 9 volts (example)=with the standby on all the time the filter caps(electrolytic caps) dry out and fail. The problem usually begins where you have to turn set on or or two times andgradually gets worse--takes longer and more tries to get it to come up.Once on it will stay on until turned off for a period of time. The caps will begin to work better (regain some of thecapacitance) as they get hot--hence one it is on it will seem ok.The beauty of this problem is most of themhappen when set is a year or two old (no warranty) and all you have to do islook at the top to locate bad ones. They are generally black or blue and round and vary in --they have twoconnections each--a + for positive and a - for negative--not unlike a batterywhich in a way they are. The + and - are marked on top and bottom of most boards. They are easy to replace and not expensive parts. The tops are silverand metal looking with creases on top and if bad they will be puffed up ontop---tops must be perfectly flat with no brown material leaking top or bottom. If this is your problem once you id them (make a drawing) you can begin. Here is the critical part---on each cap is also marked the value like 220uf 10vdc---220 micro farad at 10 volts maximum. If you find for example 6 puffed up and all are 10 vdc replace them with thesame value capacitance (like the 220 uf) but go up to at least in this case(from 10 volts) to a 16 or higher rated voltage cap.The only issue is when you go up in voltage rated value the cap is larger sosometimes there is an issue of physical space for the replacement on the boardto fit them in.The reason they cheapen these sets in this way is if 10 caps and you make25,000 sets there is a considerable savings in parts cost. They do not care as long as it lasts past the usual one year parts warranty.I have taken the time to be long winded because this really sounds like it maybe the problem you have.See attached photo of a typical bad puffed up cap and if you have questions or need advicelet me know.4_25_2012_2_13_55_am.jpg

I have a 42" legend tv with power supply board

I just inherited the same tv from my girlfriends parents. They say they heard a loud pop and the screen went black. When I turn the tv on I hear a strange noise coming from the power supply board. It sounds like it is coming from one of the yellow capacitors (sorry if there not capacitors new to tinkering). I have read that it could be the y sus board but I feel like its the power supply board. If you have found any solutions please help me out. Thanks

My Phillips 42inch plasma has

Hi,

Do you hooked up the TV through the set top box, aerial, or in cable? Also, may I know what cords/cables are you using for the connection? It will help diagnose where the fault came from.

In the morning the computer

Good day!!!

commonly, that problem is cause of failing capacitors on the power supply board..

Good day.

Please check the power supply.

This the procedure:

  1. Open the cover, remove all screws at the back.
  2. Plug in the cord then power on the TV to perform voltage data/voltage check.
  3. Check the output voltage of power supply by using a voltmeter.5vdc,for system board 12vdc for sounds and 24vdc for inverter board/back-light.
  4. If the supply got voltage drop specially on 5vdc.Unplug your TV then check some leak/bulge on top capacitor and replace it.
  5. After you replace the capacitor.Plug-in the cord and power it ON again to test if it is OK.
I hope that procedure will fix your problem.Thank you and good luck.

My 42 lcd phillips tv colur turns red and zig zag

You are not the only one I can tell you that. I had a similar problem with my Phillips 42 in. LCD HD TV.

Here's the problem. The Power Supply Board. I opened my TV up(warranty was up of course) and found several bad capacitors. Phillips and several other companies were sold capacitors that although were highly rated failed within 5 years because of a lack of preservatives. All sorts of electronic equipment is now being effected due to these defective capacitors.
Solutions?
1. Take it in and have it fixed
2. Open it up, check the board for faulty capacitors(bulged or leaking) Buy a new Power supply board and install it.
3. Remove PSB, remove faulty capacitors and replace with compatible new ones.

Hope this helps

I have a Philips 42" plasma tv model 42PF9630A/37.

Thank you for posting your question on Fixya. After seeing the images I am so sorry to tell you that the PDP(Plasma Display Panel) itself is damaged. The pixels getting "locked" from your previous feed confirms that. It is bound to happen anytime after 10-15K hours. Replacement panel will cost you nearly as much as a new set. It might be a better idea to sell of the parts from this tv so that you can buy a new one.

I have comcast converter.

1. reboot the Box
2. Upon rebooting the box if that does not cut the dice check:

A. The tv's inputs like for example the dvd (if it plays dvd's fine.

If you can play DVD's without issues you might need to call comcastic for a replacement box. Comcast converters do this over time when their basically bite the bullet. Do not think its your tv unless its happening on everything.

Let us know ether way.
