In Windows XP, go to:
Start -> Control Panel -> Sounds & Audio Devices -> Audio
Ensure that your sound card, and not a USB device, is selected for audio output as the default device.

Start -> Control Panel -> Sound

It probably might be a loose 'memory' issue. I would suggest you to take the laptop to the Lenovo Service center and if the issue is same as I suspected they should fix this in just 5 minutes and might not even charge you anything.
Please do not take the laptop to any other service center other than the Authorized one.
I recently had a huge virus attack on my laptop
Take a can of air and blow some air onto the laser gently to make sure no dust or dirt is affecting it.
Then go into the BIOS and make sure the cd-rom is the first boot device. Then put your operating system cd into the drive and "press any key" when that message comes up so the system can boot up off of the cd.
If after setting the cd-rom as the 1st boot device you can't get the laptop to boot up off of the OS cd then that means the cd-rom is bad and would need to be replaced. When you boot up off of the cd-rom your in DOS and any viruses or worms wouldn't affect it.
The screen has been sat on
It is yes, either find an IT shop that can handle the repair or depending on how the laptop is used you could plug an external screen into it as a workaround.
