If you have changed operating systems since it last worked you may need to go to Acer Emachines support site and download the microphone driver for that operating system? If you haven't changed operating systems, let us know what you may have added since it last worked? - Try to use Microphone on another device and check is it working there? If No! Then replace the Microphone. If its working then update the drivers of your machine.- Run Reginout scan and check is it your windows registry fine? After scanning if you found errors then fix it.Hope it helps.

Drivers are not independent entities they are related to the the platform that you are using as in your case its Ubuntu if you change the platform you may require to have a separate set of audio drivers.Also in most of the cases there is no need to install teh drivers manually as the latest Operating Systems can detect and install them automatically for you but in case there is an issue the drivers installers are usually provided by the manufacturers but I suggest you download the latest from the manufacturer's website.
