Please check the CORD to the handset , this can be replaced and is available in all stores. Also the earpiece speaker or the microphone can be weak and can be replaced which can solve this issue..

To set the ringer volume of the base unit, press FUNCTION/EDIT, scroll to Ringer Setting using the up or down arrow keys of the navigator key(lower right of base unit), press the right arrow key to select Ringer Setting. Press the right arrow key again to select Ringer Volume. Use the up or down arrow keys to choose the volume level, press the right arrow key to save the setting.

To set the ringer volume of the handset, press the CONF/FUNCTION button(lower left) on the handset, scroll to Ringer Setting using the up or down arrow keys of the navigator key(center of the handset), press the right arrow key to select Ringer Setting. Press the right arrow key again to select Ringer Volume. Use the up or down arrow keys to choose the volume level, press the soft key SAVE to save the setting. At the base unit press the MEMO button, then press one of the mailbox buttons(MAILBOX 1, MAILBOX 2, or MAILBOX 3) begin recording into the MIC at a adistance of 8 inches after the long beep. It sounds like the phone system base station is burned out.

Press the mute button to turn mute off.

I don't think that is possible on that model of phone. This is a phone with only the basic features and a fixed ringtone.
