Uniden PowerMax 5.8 phone
I removed the battery from the phone for about 15 seconds then reconnected it. I can now access the menu.
Record my answering message
If you have the manual there is a full tutorial on how to set it up with a standard phone line. It is pretty simple if you have that. What type of phone service provider do you have? For example I use a cable phone provider and my answering machine has to be set up via their phone number.
I have a Power Max
I found the answer to my question on line.

Your model is listed there. Just download yourself a copy and you'll have all the answers (and you won't be able to lose it again)!
Increase numbers of ring
If the machine won't go past 4 rings (which it should somewhere in the answering machine settings menu) you could always change your greeting to a message that tells the caller to wait a few more moments for you to answer, while you get to the phone....
Will not connect - "Out of Range"
One idea is that the handset is not registered with the base unit. When the phone is new, you must register the handset with the base prior to use. Is this, by any chance, a second handset that you recently acquired? If so, you should be able to set it in the cradle for the base unit for a few seconds, and after that, it should be fine.
Erased messages - digital recovery?
Sorry, the digital memory can't be restored ones the power is cut or the messages are erased. Some high tech lab somewhere FBI/CIA maybe just maybe could do it but no noting we can do about it.
you can try a old trick of holding down the play button for 10 or more seconds.
I'm really sorry.
