My john deer tractor does
Are you sure you are "in gear"? I have beat mine to death ... but it still runs. The gears are pretty tough, but they are not invincible. It is possible you have a stripped gear. If necessary, get replacement parts at your hardware store.

My John Deere traveling sprinkler
The wheels are driven by the spinning of the water wand. Turning the tips so the wand spins either clockwise or counter clockwise will determine which direction your sprinkler will travel. If it's going backwards, turn the tips so the wand spins in the opposite direction it is spinning now.

My john deere traveling sprinker
Its direction of travel is dependent on which way the spray arm spins. Was the arm bent in someway that might make it spin the wrong direction? The arm nozzles are pointed the wrong direction. If there is an adjustment that's where you need to change its direction of travel.

Make sure you are holding the shaft that goes down into the tractor still. You may need a pipe wrench to hold it tight. If it is still stuck you may need to use something like PB blaster to loosen the joint. Gently heating the joint with a propane torch and letting it cool back down might break it free as well.
