Roofing Nailer driver won't return

I too have a Model RN175 Type 1 which will fire one fastener without retruing the driver. This Type 1 does not have the selectable trigger (that allows alternating between single shot and automatic firing). So the previously posted solution (selector mid-way between SS and AS) doesn't apply here. I did a rebuild of the body and replaced the trigger assembly. Still no joy.

I called Porter Cable customers service and technical engineering (888-848-5175 and they suggested check the following items:
1) free movement of the head valve piston and good condition of the spring and o-ring
2) the condition and position of the check seal. This is a rubber sleeve with a lip that must slide up onto the anodized cylinder and COVER THE HOLES. (It has to be installed AFTER the big white plastic cylinder spacer is installed.)
3) the exhaust port to make sure that there was not trash stuck up in there
4) correct air supply pressure
Turned out for me that it was item #2 that was my problem. The rubber sleeve was not stretched up onto the anodized cylinder. This was probably due to initially hitting something hard when nailiing (blew it out of position) then my reassembling it incorrectly.
Hope this helps!
Great nail gun, great company, great customer service!

Firing pin wont retract

If you haven't gotten it unstuck by now try this: take the air line off so it isn't pressurized take a punch about the same or slightly smaller than the hammer/firing pin/the part that drives the tack, and drive it back to where it clears whatever is jamming it. Clean it, oil it and try again. If it still fails, here is a site that offers parts and kits:http://www.toolpartsdirect.com/cgi-bin/schematic.cgi/portercable/RN175/If you have another source you can try it as well. Good luck.

The gun is shooting two nails at a time it is oiled well but just started spitting out two nails at a time one gos in to the roof and the other is left laying on the roof.

OK, the most common reason for this I've found is if you are "Bump" firing the tool (By holding the trigger and bouncing the tip of the nose to act as the trigger) you have to be relaxed in using it this way. I know this sounds a bit mad but, if you're too stiff or use too much pressure holding the tool against the roof, it acts as a double fire.

Porter cable roofing nailer piston won't retract

Could be the check-band around the cylinder. Easy to check. Remove the head and pull out the cylinder. There should be a rubber band covering a series of pin-holes drilled into the cylinder. Usually the band will fall out of place or break. Use any rubber that will stay in place to cover the holes. Good luck.

Drive rod will not return to top position.

Open up the owners manual, review the parts list diagram blowup. remove the four screws (allen key) and pull top head off unit. You need to get at part #116, a plastic shock absorber that breaks off and falls between the main drive piston and part #120 piston cup. its a $15 part and $10 to ship it.

I have a Porter Cable

This sounds like it might be a problem with the nails themselves. Have you tried another brand? If the place you got the nailer is nearby, ask them about the problem. Also look if the carrier strip MIGHT not be clearing and preventing the advancement of the nails. I would also try a light spray on the coil of CRC226 available at Home Depot in the electrical dept.

How do I replace the spring in the latch door on

There are several methods for installing this little spring. My simple method. You will need 30 mm x 3 mm roll pin and a small piece of nail about 1/2 inch in length. It is very difficult to install the small factory roll pin so I use a longer one then cut off the access with Dremel. Remove the 3mm roll pin and pull out the lever discarding the broken spring. Fit the new spring on the lever using the 1/2 inch piece of nail that can pass thru the 3mm hole of the lever. The piece of nail should not stick out either side so that you can slide in the lever with short pin holding the new spring in place. Now insert the lever in place on the door and hold in position (temp pin aligned with 3mm holes in door ), lightly hammer in the long 3mm roll pin. The long roll pin will push out the temporary piece of nail holding the spring in place. Once the long roll pin is in place, cut off the extra length. Good luck

My porter cable roofing nailer rn175 type 1 it

Could have check valve out of place or broken. Easy to check. Remove head and pull out the cylinder and the round cylinder spacer. Look for black band that should have been covering small holes just below the cylinder spacer. Replace band if broken or if good install the cylinder ring on the cylinder then install the band and finally reinstall the assembly into gun. Look for any broken/cracked parts in the head of the gun. Good luck

My RN175 shoots you think it shot the nail, but when you move the gun to shoot the next nail the nail you just shot falls out the end of the gun. What could cause this?

The driver is coming down far enough to break the nail off the strip but not far enough to drive it in. This could be caused by any of the following:- The driver is broken off and too short to drive the nail- The driver is bent and doesn't travel all the way down- The seal/o-ring on the piston is damaged and air is leaking past itAny of the above will require you to remove the head and inspect the driver, piston and o-rings or have a service center check it out.
