How to install a shimano

The first thing you need to do any chain work is a chain toolchriscanhelp.jpg
This allows you to push a pin out to break the chain and then push the pin back in to lock it and then release the pin to allow the chain to bend. One of these is a must for any rider, cheao and could save your ride if a derailleur breaks or something.

Warranties may not cover that kind of damage but any bicycle shop can either lace a new rim on it or sell you a new wheel (probably cheaper).

I have a Mongoose Cambridge

http://www.sheldonbrown.com/handsup.html

Getting Riser Bars or simply flipping the stem over or getting one with a different rise and reach might give you the added height you need. If you LIKE the handlebars, the stem is the best and least-invasive option as most new ones come with front loaders (detachable front caps) that allow replacement without stripping components off one side of the handlebar. In minutes a Bicycle Shop could swap any number of them onto your bike for you to try.

A reputable Bicycle Shop would have fit the bike to you before you took it home.

The number of speeds is irrelevant and tells us nothing about the hub but the actual manufacturer and design of the hub are the determinants as there are variations. You could do some web searching for an answer. Shimano documents their components very well, for example.

Some good general resources...

We bought a Mongoose SR

Sports Store? Do they also sell fishing tackle, skis and appliances? Take it back and buy a real bike at a real Bicycle Shop.

It will be fully functional and fitted to your son before you take it home and in a month or so they'll probably re-tune the shifting and everything for free.

I dont know how to

I am not very familiar with pegs, but I presume that you just remove the bolts inside the pegs. Use a wrachet with an extension. The nut should be 5/8 inch, or in metric 15 mm. They are the same. The pegs should then slide off. Replace the nuts because they hold the wheels on. If I was wrong about something give your local bike shop a call and ask them for advice or even bring it to them.
