Symbol meaning on lux 5500

Do you mean the Electrolux/Aerus Lux 5500 canister vacuum? Is so, then the upside down U with a ? indicates check bag. Often it indicates no bag is in place. The filled in upside-down U below that means that the bag is full. Change your filter bag then reset the on/off switch. (Turn the unit off while you change the bag and then turn it on again once the bag is properly in place.) This is shown in the manual here: http://www.modes-d-emploi.com/manuals/599758/aerus-lux-5500.html?page=4 . I hope this helps. Cindy Wells

Our housekeeper has twice pulled the cord out past

Try this. Set vacuum on it's back end. Gently pull out cord and release. It may take a few tries, but should work
Repair/service manuals are only available to authorized service tech at authorized Aerus Electrolux stores. These are in the form of software available only from AE to authorized stores. The explanation process would be quite lengthy, and would itself be worth more than $75.
Taking the vacuum and cordwinder apart is somewhat tricky and can result in damage to it. Reassembling correctly can also be tricky.

When connecting handgrip to sheath wand it seems there is play in connection, turning powerhead on and off.

Sounds like you have a worn latch, check for a replacement. One certain models you can move the connector closer to the hose opening. For the most part it needs replacement, there are few fixes for this problem

Will not turn on, question mark sensor is on

This is because the filter bag has been removed and you need to install a new filter bag....Once the filter bag is installed, the unit should run as before.

Lux5000 will run until hose is attached, then

Experienced the same problem, just fixed it! Lift up the control dial on top of canister. You will see two small clear hoses inside. Detach the hose going to the "bag full" sensor light. It'll fix the problem!

I am trying to disassemble

There's a tab at the back of the rail that needs to be released. Turn the vacuum on it's side, slip the tip of a standard screwdrive into the space between the rail and the back of the vacuum, and tap lightly with a hammer. Tap toward the front of the vacuum a few times until the rail is far enough forward to be slid out fairly easily. As a side note, the rubber covers do not need to be removed to do this.

Will not come on electrolux

The Renaissance and a few other models require a series of steps in troubleshooting, done in specific order, to diagnose the problem. The vacuum, hose, wands, and power nozzle need to be taken to an authorized Aerus Electrolux shop for this. The service manual is only available to the service techs, and franchise owner.
If these steps aren't followed, additional problems may result.

Things you can check include:
1. Afterfilter. This is located beneath the on-board tools. Open the access door to the tool holder by pressing latch at front of door. Squeeze clips at the front of the tray and lift to remove. If the filter is dirty, replace it. Turn vacuum on and see if it works.

2. Check for clogs in hose, wands, and power nozzle.
Disconnect hose, hold one end up, and drop a coin in. Lift end of hose so that the coin drops out. If it doesn't there's a clog that needs cleared. You may be able to do this by attaching the hose to the blower hole, placing the other end into intake and holding it there, and turning on the vacuum. If this doesn't work, it will need to be taken to the Aerus shop for clearing.
Visually check wands for a clog. A clog in the wands can be cleared with a broom stick or similar item.
Visually check the power nozzle from the bottom and the wand connection. If no clog is seen, try dropping a coin into the wand connection and seeing if it drops through. A clog here can be cleared using a wooden spoon handle or similar blunt stick.

The bag light turns on

First try turning dial on top of the machine so the arrow lines up with the smallest dot.
The most likely problem is clogged, worn, or broken control valve assembly (CVA). It could also be clogged tubes to the CVA. This is usually caused by using "made to fit" bags rather than the genuine bags made by Home Solutions. The vacuum would need to be taken to an authorized Aerus Electrolux store for repair/replacement. Generally, if this is the problem, the interior of the vacuum, including the motor, needs cleaned as well.
Some other simple things you can check are:
Dirty afterfilter. This is located on the exhaust hole on the back of the vacuum. To access, press in on tab at back of the exhaust cover, lift cover from the back, and remove filter. If the filter is dark, it is clogged with dust particles and needs replaced. Turn vacuum on and run it for awhile. If it continues to run, this is the problem.
Another potential cause is a clogged hose. Disconnect hose at both ends. Drop a coin down one end and lift that end to allow coin to drop through the other end. If it does, fine. If not, connect hose to the exhaust port, place other end into a large garbage bag, or into the in port of the vacuum, and turn on. This almost always clears the hose.
Check the elbow of the power nozzle where the hose connects. Drop a coin through here to check for clogs. If there is one, it can generally be cleared by pushing it toward the brush with a wooden spoon handle, or similar blunt object.

Cord will not retract

Tilt the front of the vacuum to a 45-90 degree angle. Gently tug and release cord until it retracts.
If this doesn't work, repair or replacement of the cordwinder is needed. For this the vacuum needs to be taken to an authorized Aerus Electrolux store.

Need to open the canister to get to the cord

Why do you need to get to the cord assembly?
If the cord will not retract, tilt the vacuum to about a 45 degree angle and gently tug and release cord. It will usually retract.
Due to problems ensuing from untrained persons attempting to reassemble the vacuum and having to take it to the shop anyway, I recommend not taking it apart.
If the above isn't the problem, please take it to the nearest Aerus Electrolux store for repair.

Dear Technician,

Try tilting the vacuum so the front is at about a 75-90 degree angle to the back. Gently tug and release cord. This will usually retract the cord.
