The easiest solution is to put an sd card (8gb or less) into the sd slot. Have Garmin Express install to the sd card. You can also do a hard reset and try to install to the device itself. A hard reset restores the files to factory default, so it may free up enough space.

There should be a built in trip planner app to set up your trip. If it is a long trip and you don't like the route just add a stop for gas or food along the route you want to take. If it is a short trip then get over the fact it is recommending something different, mute, it and drive how you want to go. It is a computer and does not know what you may know. As an alternative, add a via point by telling it a new destination while it already has one. For via points remember to work backwards. Final destination, then next to last and so on.

You should do the following: Changing the Navigation Settings;

Two thing can cause this. If your unit is running firmware version 5.3, this version has a bug where the touchscreen will work for about 5 seconds then the unit will lock up. Updating the unit to version to version 5.4 will fix the problem.
