Black screen with cursor and cd stuck in computer

POSSIBLY a virus.
First of all, straighten out a paperclip and poke it gently through the small hole in the DVD drive bezel, this will release the stuck CD and you can then try and repair the installation. I suspect that if you cannot access Windows, you might need to do a full reinstall.

Before doing so, try and remove the hard drive and hook it up to a desktop as a slave drive, recover the data you want to keep.

Now, replace the hard drive, and boot to the bios, (assume you have a SATA drive)

In the Bios change the SATA drive settings from AHCI to ATA. Save and reboot with your installation CD in the drive, re-install windows...

I am using DELL STUDIO

Most likely, it's not due to the computer, it's due to bandwidth. Either you're direct connection to the internet, or the bandwidth you pay for from your internet service provider...
1.) So, if you're connected wirelessly, try connecting directly with a CAT5(or 5E, or 6) ethernet cable, that will speed your connection up A LOT.
2.) If you ARE connected by cable, check your download/upload limits set by your internet service provider. If you have only dial-up, it probably won't be fast enough. You'd need at least a DSL or ADSL connection, cable broadband is best.
Hope that helps!

The volume icon appears randomly on my screen

Well, just noticed, it is Dell Studio. I would recommend below mentioned things, I would suggest reinstalling of the driver. Before you do that, please make sure to know, what sound card is installed on your PC and download the relevant driver from Dell Support site. Go to dell.com/support and click on "Drivers and Downloads". Enter the "Service Tag" of your laptop and Click "Go". Download the audio drivers from "Audio Category"
Step 1: Right click on My Computer Icon and Go to properties
Step 2: If on Vista, from left hand side "Click on Device Manager"
Step 3: Go to "Sound, Video" and select the relevant list item and uninstall the driver by pressing a right click...
Step 4: Once the uninstall is complete, reinstall the downloaded driver from Dell.
this should eliminate the Drivers' issue and if it still doesn't work, it may be the hardware issue..Just let me know, how this goes..Please feel free to message me, if you need any assistance...
thanks,

Hi,

Hi,
Try running the diagnostics on the computer to check if all the hardware is working fine. The diagnostics would take atleast 2 hrs to complete but would do a through check for the same. I have come accross the same issue on the said laptop and we have ended up replacing the system fan for the same.

To run the diagontics
1. Shut down the system
2. Press and hold the FN key on the keyboard and press the power button to start the system
3. Follow the screen prompts to run the diagnostics.

Note and post back any error codes if any

Thanks for using fixya
