I have a 1994 Yamaha 40 HP 3 cylinder 2 stroke engine starts and runs fine in neutral try to accelerate under load and it only will pull about 2800-3000 RPMs and wont go any faster it will rev fine in neutral any ideas? The carbs were cleaned at a dealer in the fall because it wouldn't idle
Reving in neutral does not mean the same thing as under load. If you need to pull 4500rpm under load and for an instant the load was gone, you would probably overrev to 6500. With the cover off and motor not running move the throttle to full forward. Look at your carbs and see if the throttle plates are wide open. If they are not all wide open take it back to the dealer. The throttle adjustment is off. You need the full range of travel from idle to topend.

The motor starts fine and idles alright. When placed in forward it runs fine at low RPM's. At approximatly 1/4 throttle, under load, a loud banging noise starts and the RPMs will not go any higher without the engine faulting.
Does this sound like an issue with the power head or a lower unit slip problem? I have heard some stories about the 3 cylinder models having spark issues on the lower cylinder under certain loads.
pull the spark plugs and see if they look like there burnning the same if so then i dought its a spark issue and if it was in the lower unit u wouldnt here a loud anything it sounds like a rod bearing i have had the same thing happen to several yamahas under a load

I replaced the spark plugs, check for water in the gas and cleaned the fuel filter. The fuel is flowing to the carb.
It will be hard to start, when it does start it runs for a few minutes at almost full throttle. When I try to idle down it dies. Then will not restart.
Help!
It sounds like the float is sticking in the carb. Since the carb is higher than the fuel tank it pulls the fuel in by vaccum of the engine. when running at high rpms, it can burn the fuel thats flowing into the carb, when you idle down, the bowl of the carb is filling up with fuel faster than the engine can burn it and causing it to flood. Then when it shuts off at idle it does not want to start back up because it is flooded. To make a long stary short, pull the carb and give it a good cleaning and your problems should be solved.

yamaha 115 hp fuel injected outboard motor will not turn off. Also runs very sluggish.
not enough information on the motor. what year and model? but all yamaha outboards are shut down by the C.D.I. being grounded by the key switch or the emergency kill switch. the cheapest thing to test or replace is the key switch and the emergency kill. with more info on engine I can help you further.

I have a 1978 115 mercury outboard that is putting out to much voltage to the battery. the voltage is 15.9 volts at the battery. i changed the rectifier, but that did not cure the problem. anyone have a solution.
Your motor is fine. It needs to put out more than 12 volts or the battery will not charge. Most alternators put out between 13 - 17 volts, so this is well within the range.

Hard to crank but idle's fine but when you gear down it choke's down. It run's fine at home with the water hose, both idling and gearing down. Once we take it to the river it wants to act up.
While at the river try to adjust the fuel air mixture. When you are on the water it puts the engine under a load and if that dont work then dont be afraid to bump up the idle stop screw slightly.

Hello, we have recently received a secondhand 8HP Yamaha short shaft outboard motor to use on our new dinghy, however, the water pump and fuel line need replacing. Can you please advise where I can obtain a manual for this motor? Thank you.

how to clean boat carburetor. 1984 35 hp mercury outboard sprays gas out of small hole towards top side of carburetor when starting. Motor will start on occassion for 5-10 seconds, but then gas will spray out of the small hole.
Carburetors are tricky, They have to be completely dismantled, soaked in carb cleaner, make sure all the gunk is off, every jet clean and clear, If you can't get a wire through it, you won't get gas through it, make sure you can blow through it, Get some guitar strings, .009 is about the smallest guitar string you will find, you can buy them separately at the music store if you don't have one. Change the filter in the line, when the carbs go back on, the adj all have to be the same, not one wide open and 2 idleing, Float level is also important, they don't sell complete kits anymore, you have to buy the parts individually, gaskets , etc, good luck.
