replace the switch ! will only fail again when your out and then cant get back !

swop the power pack from the other 3 cyls and see if problem moves over then if yes then replace it ! if not check wires etc !

is that on the remote control lever ? if yes then adjust the throttle cable to push against the throttle stop on the engine end so when you select gears it only moves when you go to accelerate ! mite need to adjust the carb pickup to align with mark on main lever that moves the timing rod to the trigger under the flywheel !

what make outboard have you ?? all different !

check its not overheating , put your hand on the engine ! oil level low ? when does it happen ?

below the carbs is the shift rod and take the small pin out , then remove all bolts that hold the gear case to the leg then drop the unit and place in a vice to hold by the skeg fin below the prop ! normally its the edges of the gears and the central slide clutch that wear, remove and have re cut at machine shop ! saves buyin new gear set !! check all linkages ok for wear FIRST though !!

standard system is in the fuel pump on side of engine where the feed pipe comes in , very basic and i would fit a water seperating filter in the boat which is the size of an oil filter and saves stripping the carbs when you get dirt and water in your fuel ! check the diaphram is ok and not hard and no leaks !

its on the ignition key ! as you turn it on to first position you then push the key in then as it starts let go and with the control lever on a slight high tickover you mite have to dab the choke a couple of times till it ticks over ! dont over choke or you will flood the plugs ! less is best and just let it warm up before setting off !

put recoil assy in a vice with several turns on the spring and clamp so you can see the area where rope fits in and fit rope and route with handle on then carefully release from vice !

is it cranking correctly ? compressions over 100psi and 2 sparks etc ?

if you do that the oil mix will be more at low rpm ! sort the original system is best !

poss carbs need cleaning as less load in reverse ? crank seals could be leaking ! compressions more than 100psi ?

carb clean ? prop bush slipping ?

remove spark plugs and you should be able to rotate the flywheel easy ! then try starter to spin over , if not then remove starter and check the brushes inside etc ! check solinoide ok ! check wires ok !

if you mean the cowl below the top hood then there are bolts front and rear and poss a couple of clips inside then pulls off !

how old ?

compressions more than 100psi ? carb clean and fuel not older than 5mths ? timing correct ? running on all cylinders ?

remove flywheel and then the trigger senser in the center then the stator will come off !

injectors mite need cleaning in injector cleaner ! remove to soak them !

start engine while in water with slightly high tickover , remove throttle cable and find throttle stop screw and adjust till 800rpm holding the throttle arm against the stop and see if you can select forward gear without stalling ! depends what size pitch prop your using as you mite need tickover slightly higher but as long as it selects without stalling then ok ! as long as it doesnt jump forward , in gear should be 800rpm + or - 100 max ! if still stalling then possible requires fuel system cleaning !
