MPEG video plays only sound, not picture

I think it might be either a CODEC or memory issue. The CODEC thing can be solved by downloading the K-Lite CODEC pack, which you can find free via an internet search (see below). The memory issue is harder to solve. You need to see when you are playing the video if your CPU is running very high. If it is then you will struggle to play the track on your current computer without improving the memory. However I think it more likely that it is a CODEC issue since both the players you mention are not set up to play some MPEG files, as not all CODEC's are included. You can download the CODECS here: http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/windows_7_codec_pack.html However always use the advanced option for installing as they do like to put on software that might change your default browser. You can decline these with that option. Some people use VLC player, but all though this will play just about every video file, it will turn the icons into a thing that looks like a traffic cone! So I don't recommend it.

I cannot play my Windows Media library files after upgrading from windows 7 pro to windows 8.1 pro. It states licence cannot be downloaded as it has been already downloaded 10 times. How to I resolve

Have you tried uninstalling and then re-installing it? Go to add or remove programs and remove any old version. There should be no limit to how many times you downloaded it. Take a look in your 'downloads' file to see if it is in there or not. Start again by downloading latest version and then go to file and install. I found this one that might help. Good luck. https://2acc1-downloads.phpnuke.org/en/download-version/-z-l-n-g-l-l-x#.VCyUt2eJCzk

Windows Media Player encountered a problem while playing the file.

Try using a different player with built-in codecs. Windows Media Player doesn't support a lot of files. I suggest using VLC Player. It's free and plays all files!

Cannot play cpi files

See AVCHD; CoreAVC and more associations are required for Windows Media Player in Windows 7 to go for those extensions; or VLC, or of course Sony/Panasonic codecs associated with the camera cranking out those files. Sometimes there's even a shared key with the camera, the idea being that Sony will let you preserve propriety of your Film Editor title even though all your focus pullers have in-camera editing staring them in the face..

My video cannot be played

Can't really tell from your description what the exact problem is.

If it won;t load then you may be trying to load either a corrupt file or one not supported by the player. Media player handles a lot of file types so it usually is a bad video file. Other than a few Macintosh or apple based video formats havn't had to use another player.

if you can hear the video then all you need to do is install a video codec to see the picture. You can download a few free codec packs. These will have literally hundred of codecs. A codec is simply a translate or a type of video driver. Each is different . Some like DivX allow for a very small file size with a great picture quality. (This is called compression)A few seconds of high grade video may be say 501-0 mb in size using DivX but without a codec it would be 200-300mb in size for the exact same video. That is why they are used. The problem is there are so many differant ones you can't be sure of which one you will need. A codec pack has hundreds of these which are then automatically loaded when needed. Two real good and FREE packs are K-Lte and FFD-Show. Just download one of the packs (pick any of the setups but you only need on of the two smaller ones)
Just go to http://www.free-codecs.com/ and pick one of the two and install and this will fix any codec issues.

If it possible that the media player is the problem. ie the program is corrupt. You can download a new copy from Microsoft and reload it and you can also get one of the codec packs which comes with a version of player.

If none of this fits your problem just respond here and someone should be able to help you out if you can describe the problem with more details.

I have an .avi file

The video file you have might be encoded with a codec you don't have installed.
There are codec packs which cover the most of them, so that media players can play videos.
You can try downloading the most popular I know, k-lite codec pack from here. And try to play the video again.

If you don't want to mess with codecs and stuff, you can always try downloading vlc media player, that plays nearly anything without the need of separate codecs.
