hello,
maybe your sata connection or ide connection is not connected well or in some cases it doesn't detect the processor fan control sensor it turns the comp off after a couple secs. Are there any beeps associated with it turning off? Also, just open up the case and make sure everything appears to power on.
Within 20 seconds of turning my computer on the
This could be any one of a number of things, really. Disconnect everything connected to the PC that is not needed and boot. If you're able to boot OK, that tells you that there is a problem with one or more of your devices. This could be anything from a defective peripheral device - to having good peripherals, but simply too many connected to the PC. If you can get every device working at one point or another - but fail as more and more are added - if indicates a power supply unit (PSU) that is over burdened - and cannot supply the load. This is remedied by replacing the PSU with one that has a higher wattage rating than the one it is to replace AND has enough wattage to supply the connected load - plus 20%. Why plus 20%? That's because we don't want to run the PSU at maximum capacity all the time. 80% of capacity is a good starting point - and allows for a small amount of expansion. The more extra capacity you allow - the longer it will be able to work for you before becoming "too small".
The internet is loaded with guides as to how to go about sizing a PSU. Look through them and manufacturer's sites for help with that.. look for recent articles as there are many that are 2, 3, or more years old. Prices back then were high compared to now - so if you find info you like on an old page - don't be put off by the prices quoted.
Heat is another big problem. Especially if the PC is on the floor instead of your desk. There's tons of dust and dirt on the floor and your PC has several fans sucking it all up. Vents get clogged, fan blades get coated - basically - the entire innards of the PC is wearing a thick, furry jacket - keeping it warm. This is NOT a good thing. Disconnect everything, and open the PC up. With a crevice tool on a vac - vacuum all the dust and dirt you can. Pay particular attention to the CPU fan and cooler assembly. Remove the fan from the cooler to vacuum the jacket off of it. Clean dirt and dust that collects on all the fan blades - this reduces efficiency and throws the fan out of balance and will shorten the life of the fan considerably. Vacuum the power supply too - you'll be surprised how much dirt will be trapped inside it. Resist the temptation to blow out the case with a can of compressed air. Doing so will only drive dust & dirt deeper into the machine. Once cleaned up, consider moving the PC to your desktop (if it isn't already), reconnect and try again.

No Booting to BIOS, Monitor just stays on Save
If there are no beeps at all on boot up it's a memory timing problem,
Go into bios in standard bios settings menu and disable 'Halt On All Errors' if it isnt already, this may show up the problem in the initial power on self test.
I suspect the on-board battery because I did some
Hi,
Thanks for using Fixya.
If your system BIOS time keeps on going back to Jan. 1, 2004 without you changing it. There is a 95% chance that you have a bad battery. All you need to do is to replace it. If replacing it doesn't help, try checking the battery terminal if they are still good. I hope this helps.
Thanks and have a nice day.

MACHINE CANT SWITCH TILL I RESET CMOS
You need to pop off the side of your computer and see what type of cmos battery it uses, then go to a battery supply store and get a new one. Its either dead or not holding a charge. Should only cost a few bucks to replace.
Desperate for help with boot problem!
Unfortunately you haven't given enough information. I will assume that this unit was working at some time and that you tried to improve it in some manner. Actually what this sounds like is an overloading of the power supply. If you recently added any hardware I would start there (i.e., remove it). If that doesn't work then try a different HDD (that is properly formatted, of course). You could also start from your last step and add hardware one at a time until it works.

Are you connected to the Internet when the problem occurs? If not, that is the reason you are getting the error message.

have you checked all you condesers? sounds like you might have some that are almost ready to pop...
HDD not reconigized
You need to press F2 or Del on start up and enter the bios to get your hard drive recognised, normally F10 to auto identify or select automatic.
You will have to select the advanced cmos settings and set your cdrom as first boot device and insert your XP cd save settings and exit, as the system wont boot because of the hardware change, so you will need to let it install the setup files, then use the option to press R to repair the system or enter to install windows again.
