Why do I need to defrost every week?

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly. I had to do a reverse lookup of your model number and think I am close with this model number: 106.72102100 and can be found using the www.searspartsdirect.com website. Your defrost timer is item 4 of this link:
http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/part-model/Kenmore-Parts/Refrigerator-Parts/Model-10672102100/0582/0166000/P0109056/00002?blt=06&prst=&shdMod=
detailed view:
http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/part-number/Kenmore-Parts/Refrigerator-Parts/482493/0046/106/Model-10672102100/0582/0166000?keySuffixId=NA&productTypeId=x&searchModelNumber=10672102100&subCompDesc=Liner&brandDesc=KENMORE&modelDesc=TOP-MOUNT-REFRIGERATOR&blt=11

It should automatically cycle your refrigerator into the defrost mode as often as 3 times a day. When the defrost timer or the defrost element (item 4 this link: http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/part-model/Kenmore-Parts/Refrigerator-Parts/Model-10672102100/0582/0166000/P0109056/00006?blt=06&prst=&shdMod=
fails you will have to do a manual defrost. In addition a failed bi-metal thermostat (item 2 same link) can also cause the unit not to cycle out of the defrost cycle once it begins.

You can manually rotate the defrost timer using the 2 tabs if you kneel down and look into the overhead of the fresh food compartment. You will see a circular hole with the inclined tabs on it. Rotating this SLOWLY until the compressor shuts off or you hear a noticable click will start the defrost cycle. (Due to the inclined tabs you can only rotate it ONE direction.) The defrost cycle should self terminate after abiut 45 minutes. If it does not self terminate that indicates a problem with one of the 3 main defrost components. Timer, element or bi-metal thermostat.

Thanks for choosing FixYa,
Kelly

The freezer is set to

If the defrost thermostat is bad, it can prevent the heater from coming on OR it won't turn the heater off when it gets too warm. It is clamped to the evaporator coil at the top to sense the temp. If it appears to be misshapen it is bad.
With an ohm meter it should show continuity when cold and none when warm.
You can also bypass(disconnect the two wires plugged into it and twist them together) the thermostat to see if the heater comes on then. If it does then you know the thermostat is bad and needs replaced.

Freezer works but bottom part doesn't keep foods

then you would have a defrost problem remove the rear panel and you will most likely find a bunch of ice defrost this with a hair dryer then assure that your fan is working if not replace the fan if it is then you would do a continuity test on both the tstat and the heater if either of these were not to show continuity that would be the one that you would have to replace if you have any further questions message me back and please remember to rank how this opinion has helped in your appliance situation when we are done Thanks again

Kenmore refrigerator keeps running. We have tried

Sounds like a sealed system issue.

If the appliance is more than 3 years old OR it was repaired in the last 6 months, it may be a leak on the sealed system, so there is not enough refrigerant and it can't reach the adequate temperature.

You can try this:

1. Clean the back coils. remove all dust. (perhaps the coils are at the bottom).

2. Use a fan and blow some air at the coils. Check if temperature lowers. If so, perhaps the evaporator fan is broken.

3. The sides of the appliance are hot? Any recent service? Perhaps the technician forgot to connect a wire.

4. Unplug the appliance and wait about 10 minutes, then plug it back to the voltage. Check if the problem continues.

5. Where is the location of the appliance? Next to the range? In the garage? If the fridge is located on a hot place, it will not cool down properly.

If everything of above looks ok, then you may need to contact a technician. Check the warranty information in the user manual. Some appliances have a good warranty coverage.

If appliance is more than 5 years old, it may not be a good idea to repair if sealed system or compressor is broken. It will be quite expensive and repairs will not last long.

Good luck.
