Several possibilities come to mind - the watch may have a small plastic spacer under the crown which is there to stop the battery running flat before the watch is sold. If that's the case then simply remove the spacer and press the crown in. Possibly, the battery is flat and will need replacing, or you've received a faulty watch - either way (and I interpret your using the word 'received' as meaning that it was a gift to you) you should tactfully point this out to the giver. They wouldn't want to have wasted their money, and hopefully they've kept the receipt.
